Hey guys, I tried to run a qwiso , but could only find 95% rubbing alcohol ethanol so i used that as my base, and i was left with sticky runny substance that never dried.
I warm water bathed it non stop for almost 12 hours, then let it sit for 48 hours

. it stayed runny, I attempted to purge, and i smoked it like honey oil on a joint, it wasn't too bad, but the problem is i'm trying to make shatter and I have another mason jar in the freezer winterizing and I'd like to turn it into shatter this time.

Not sure if im missing something, I thought that u were just suppose to let the alcohol evaporate off then scrape off the shatter? Any suggestions would be much appreciated , thank you!

Ah. Well that's helpful info. Because I did a similar thing to OP a few years back. And mine didn't solidify either. Also. It tasted really strange too. Like the iso it was washed with. Despite the evap baths. And leaving it to sit for a while.

Might just stick to hash.

Rubbing alcohol is usually de-natured with something like camphor so it's undrinkable and is no good for making oil with.

Oil made with even pure alcohol will be runny and for some that's a desirable result.

They also like to use anhydrous chemicals to dehydrate water from the alcohol which when ur evaporating in normal air is not leaving your product its actually concentrating the poison

Some salts that can get concentrated are also not good the material u start with is nearly as important as the solvent u use to extract

Gross. I regret smoking that last batch, at least it was a small amount. I don't want to junk the stuff in the freezer though. I think i'll use it for sore muscles like you would with rubbing alcohol, see how it works out. I appreciate the info i didn't realize it was that bad for me, i figured I was evaporating the toxic. I'm going to make a butane batch later today, i'll post some pictures.

If it was made for rubbing, they may have put some glycerin in it. It's very slow to evaporate, like weeks. I don't know if that's what is was. What does the label say?

Solvents should be "lab grade" or "analytical grade" or "reagent", this means they are pure with just the solvent and maybe pure water and nothing else.

I'm going to do a batch using 99% methyl hydrate from the hardware store. It really strips everything out so will clean it up later doing a separation with naphtha and maybe winterize it in EverClear or ISO. Mostly pot I've already screened for dry sift kief but it still has a lot of resin glands left in it and can't be wasting that. :)

did a BHO run, I got a 0.8 yield(unpurged) from 7gs of high grade (Sour Diesel). For the second wash on left over material which would you recommend iso, or ethanol or do they both yield the same results? For ethanol I live in Canada so we don't have EverClear here, but we do have global 94%

Semi - purged.. Having trouble keeping a vacuum in my cheap vac set up. gonna re-purge later.IMG_20170729_203234788.jpg

Methyl hydrate is a bad solvent. Might aswell do hexane wash if u choose that route
How is it a worse solvent than say ISO? Hexane is used extensively in the food industry to extract all sorts of edibles and considered safe for all.

Methanol does strip out more unwanted stuff but I'll clean that up with a naphtha extraction after.

If your doing chemical distillation it might....might..strong might... Be okay... But your terps are toast. This guy is looking for cheap most effective way to get product to dab. Which is a ice ethanol run...not iso... Not naphtha...not windshield wiper fluid.. Clear grain alcohol with no water.. Cept like 3-9% that impossible to rid of without further chemical distillation or chem addition. Now... U can moonshine or make a vapor distillation can make everclear from corn mash.. Or sugar water n yeast..idk. U can just buy dabs???

Ethanol is added to rubbing alcohol like methanol is added to windshield wiper fluid so should we call EverClear rubbing alcohol?

Methanol is just the simplest form of alcohol with a single carbon molecule where ethanol has two. Other than one will get you drunk without making you go blind there really isn't any difference other than that. Both of them can kill you but so can too much water.

I've made my own EverClear starting with a simple sugar water/turbo yeast mash but it takes too damn long. EverClear, 95% ethanol, is $35/750ml while Methyl hydrate, 99% methanol is $9/4000ml and I can just evap it off instead of distilling it to recover an expensive solvent. The oil produced is not very good unless you want it for edibles then you have a full plant extract that is better than a purified product is medicinally. Easy enough to do a separation on it with a pure hydrocarbon like naphtha and get an oil that is almost as good as BHO, smokes great and can knock you on your ass.

Just finished dry sifting all my older trim and some bud and got 42.7g of kief and 322g of sifted trim to do my extract on.

DrySift07.jpg

I need about 3 - 4g of kief to each gram of oil so will need 10 - 15g of finished oil to make it all into black hash like this stuff.

Once I get back from BC I'll make some better hash using BHO for the oil part of the mix and much fresher pot that is waiting in the freezer. :)

I am doing this right now, testing with 40 liters and a 48 hour turbo 20% yeast. I will have to do approx 20-30 batches to distill off the ethanol (2 liter boiling vessel, 300mm vigreux, 400mm graham) which is the setup I use to recover ISO. Just figured I would try it with 13Kg of sugar, some yeast nutrients and a package of the turbo. If I get 6 liters I will be happy. With the ISO it takes about 20 min to dial in the heating mantle and let it run. Probably another 20 to cool and reload. My distillation setup works splendidly so I hope the same for this experiment. I am starting to think after reading your post I may be underestimating the amount of work I have created for myself. lol. The whole thing cost $30 to try, so maybe $4-5 a liter to produce. (plus labour)

I had also intended to distill off any methanol, carbon filter and then dry with 3a zeolite to about 98%. Then use that as a base to be proofed with distilled water to 60% and then I was going to add pear brandy essence (or moonshine or whatever flavour) and infuse with honey oil. No idea how this will turn out, probably like crap, worth a try though. The idea of cannabis infused moonshine appeals to me :-) I would love to hear results if anyone has done this before.

Exactly feeling your pain, Everclear isnt available in all the Provinces. I briefly played with the idea of buying cheap vodka and distill that to get the ethanol, but it is stupid expensive at somewhere around $30-$50/liter. Everything else is denatured as you now know so making your own ethanol is the only option. I am toying with the idea of building a beer keg still in the garage as it would be way more efficient than using sugar wash and turbo yeast.

Global 94%? Never heard of it, wow $78 for 1.75L , ah Quebec; Ontario needs to unbunch its panties man. I hate that I cant buy this stuff locally. Still pretty pricey though.

Additionally I have been trying to locate a Canadian source of lab grade hexane with zero luck. If any of you lads in Canada know where to source it please let me know.

A trick I use to cut distillation time is to freeze the mash in milk jugs then invert them over a pail and let the alcohol drain off then distill that. The wine making kit someone gave me has a 5gal pail with a hole in the lid for an air lock that the neck of the milk jugs fit in nicely. As the alcohol drains off the ice left behind goes white from the top/bottom to the neck and once it's all white take it of and stick the next one on. Gets rid of most of the water and the stuff that drains off is drinkable tho not so tasty so a mix with some flavour is nicer tho once I'd get buzzed it went down fine on it's own. :)

A single pass thru the still turns out a decent product close to EverClear but I'd run it thru again to get it a little cleaner for making oil with. Gave up drinking so cook up camp stove fuel to make naphtha and use that instead. Get a better oil too with that. Coleman's is the best tho why it costs almost $20.gal is a bit of a mystery. Stuff used to be cheaper than gasoline.

My damn dog broke my last 2L boiling ball so I built a still out of a big glass bottle that holds about 4L and a condenser out of a coffee can and some 3"8 copper tubing so that a 2L pop bottle with frozen, salted water can sit in it on the work bench and doesn't need a running water source for cooling. The coffee can is full of anti-freeze for better heat transfer and the first one I built that I used water in rusted out after only a few months.
