Newb Grow: 400W CMH, DR80 SCROG with 3 White Widows and 2 Northern Lights

First off, this is a newbie grow journal. I'm a newbie myself, and I want the journal to highlight what new growers may face, so It will probably be more inclusive than other grow journals. In other words, if you don't want to read walls of text and see tons of images of pre-flower plants, this might not be the journal for you.

The background. I've done two grows before, one outdoors and one indoors. The outdoor grow went great with very little effort. The indoor grow went OK under CFL's, but I wasn't satisfied with the quality. I learned a lot during those grows, but I still have a long ways to go.

That was two years ago. Fast forward to now; I just bought my own house and I have an extra room that is pre-vented to the dryer ducts and wired for 220v. Keep in mind I don't smoke much. I love to grow, but for whatever reason I just don't feel the need to toke up that often. With that in mind, I'm growing mainly for quality, yield is secondary. I want to get a few mother plants on hand so I don't have to rely on seeds, so for this first grow I'm putting 5 plants in the tent--the White Widows are unsexed, Northern Lights are feminized. Hopefully between them all I'll get a decent selection to choose a clone for mothering. For future grows I plan on growing hyrdo, one or two plants at a time SCROG.

The Specs:

I've decided on a 400 Watt Ceramic Metal Halide, to be used inside my Secret Jardin DR80. I ordered up the bulbs and went with a Sun System 2 reflector based on feedback from others who had used it with CMH. That was a bad choice on my part--low and behold the SS2 measures 32", precisely 4" shorter than my tent is wide. Even with it in the tent diagonally, it's just taking up too much room and I feel that it will inevitably complicate things. I ordered a smaller Sunleaves Sunspot 6" that should fit the tent perfectly with ducting and all.

I also ordered a new sunleaves 6" inline fan--with two fans I should have enough ventilation options to keep heat in check. I'm hoping the 6" flying solo will be enough, but it doesn't hurt to have options. My initial heat tests with the SS2 unvented, passive air intakes and my 4" can fan pushing air from inside out had temps holding at 80 degrees. With the reflector diagonal and vented, it went up to and held at 84 (that kind of surprised me). I haven't tested the new rigging as it won't be here until tomorrow ;)

The 400 Magnetic CAP Ballast I got for the CMH is virtually silent. I expected a lot more noise based on what I'd read but quite frankly, even if it gets a little louder you'll never hear it over the vent fan.

For this grow I'll be growing in Fox Farms Ocean Forest. I started the seeds directly in Rapid Rooters. In my past grows I started directly in Miracle Grow seed mix and all my seeds popped. I used that strategy based on input from the folks at Mandala Seeds and so far it's worked great. I know that Rapid Rooters have given people mixed results when it comes to seeds (great for clones from what I've seen). Luckily, all five of my seeds popped. I'm chalking it up to luck for now, but I really feel that with proper heat and moisture control presoaking and paper towels aren't necessary.

And those are my seedlings. The 3 White Widow's in the fore were planted 6 days ago. I moved them under the cfl's a little late so the two early birds stretched more than I'd like. The two Northern Lights in the back were planted three days ago and are already popping up (the heat mat seems to be working great) when I took the photo yesterday. They peaked out under CFL's so hopefully I won't see the stretch. I plan to plant the RR's into peat cups in a few days with some seed mix, then after a week hopefully they'll go into their permanent homes, some 3 gallon pots with the FF OF and in the tent under the big light. The stretchy ones will get planted up the stem a bit to strengthen the base. Also once they go into the peat cups I'll get a light breeze on them.

That's it for now. I'll be updating often and I'm sure there are details that I've missed. Please feel free to offer advice, ask questions or pitch me shit. I will update with pictures of the setup tomorrow.

In the tray with the lights on, nice and humid:

And updated seedling pics:

Unfortunately, I think I killed one of the NL girls last night. I went to transplant one of the seedlings, moved the seed tray in front of the heater, and by the time I realized my error I looked back and saw that the healthy NL on the back right had insta-wilted. She didn't recover when I checked on her late last night, so I fear that she's done for :( Lesson learned.

After transplant.

The wilted Northern Lights (front left) definitely wasn't going to make it . After the pic I yanked it. The other NL (front right) is looking great, it's already growing its first set of real leaves along with the stretched WW in the back. The mid WW was having a hell of a time breaking that seed off, so I broke down and gently removed it after the pic (I know, should have just left it). By the end of the night it had filled out quite a bit though, enjoying its newfound freedom. The rightmost WW (rear right) is an odd dark green color, and appears to be deformed. All the plants, even the wilted NL had the taproot coming out the bottom of the rapid rooters. The transplant soil is just Black Gold seedling soil.

The two viables--one Fem'd NL on right, WW unsexed on left. The other two WW's are stunty, but I'll let them go for awhile to see if they catch up.

I haven't done a great job keeping stable ambient temps. Some nights they've been on a heat pad, others I forget to turn it on, other nights the room heater is keeping temps at low 70's, other nights I forget to turn the heater on and the room sits at low 60's. I'm not sure if that's contributing to the 2 stunties not progressing, but my guess is it's certainly not helping.

Tonight I'm going to take them out of the humidity dome and keep the room at low 70's. If I only end up with 2 that's fine, I just get to veg longer to fill up the screen.seedling4.jpg

Put them in the tent yesterday under the 400watt CMH. I managed to get my temps under control, running at 73-78 at the plant level.

NL is looking a little droopy I think it's getting overwatered. I've only been watering once daily, soil seems dry an inch in when I water but I'm going to let it go a day. The black gold seedling soil I planted them in seems to be compacting way too much from watering. I'll probably go with a different soil for the seedlings next time around.

The White Widow (left front) is looking pretty good. The two rear WW's still haven't done jack shit aside from pop their heads out, I'm pretty sure I'm just going to yank them

Last but not least is the tent shot--looking pretty good, a lot better than my last grow with a crap-ton of CFL's hanging everywhere :) The tent flap is covering up a little fan that circulates air inside the tent--that's all I have in there at this point. The Sunleave's 6" fan pulls the air from outside the tent. It's a little noisy, but not too bad with the speedster running it at medium.

White Widow is still looking good. It seems to be getting compact leaf growth. The cotyledon are finally starting to yellow.

eos 294.jpg

The Northern Light is still droopy. I've been waiting 2-3 days between waterings now and letting it completely dry out. Just don't know what is up with it and the first set of real leaves are starting to change color a bit. The new leaves seem to be OK. This is what I get for growing two different genetics--the WW is fine and the NL not so much, both under the same conditions!

eos 297.jpg

I started a few more seeds in soil that have already popped on a heat mat. Not being sure that the WW is a female I wanted a little insurance.

I messed up. I had set up a second timer for my germ/mother area and put the heater on it. So the heaters been turning off at night, which means my night temps are likely getting really damn low (outside temps are freezing and I keep a window open in the grow room for fresh air.) Been doing that for probably three days, not sure what it will mean in the long run, although I'm seeing growth in the new seedlings (two already have first true leaves) as well as a burst of growth from the WW and NL under the 400w.

Gave them their first feeding two days ago, FF Grow Big at 500ppm. Definitely boosted growth, not sure about their color but they seem to be doing OK all things considered.

The WW:

The NL:

Those lower leaves never really recovered their droop, but all the new leaves have looked good. With the CMH in the cooled hood, I can hold my hand on the glass without any discomfort. I'm considering taking the glass off. As it is the glass surface sits about 8" over the girls.

They are moving along. I developed an N defeciency with the WW, I think due to getting the PH of my water out of range. The NL seems to have recovered and is looking great, the WW lost some of it's lower leaves but is doing much better now. I also had one day when the temps got up to 91, but they didn't seem to mind much. I also moved another WW in, and transplanted my 2 originals into their permanent homes. As other people have observed, they stay really tight under the CMH. I actually moved the light up a bit to encourage them to stretch a little. I love the tight internodes but I don't want to keep them in veg for three months :) I plan on topping the first two this week.

Lots of growth this week. I also topped the White Widow using FIM on Thursday, and I already have 6 new branches pushing out. They are starting to smell so I'm probably going to put my filter on the fan this week. Temps having been holding steady at 79-82 day and 70 at night. I've found I can easily adjust temps with minor increases on the fan speed controller and moving up my light a bit.

The WW after FIM:

I have started feeding Fox Farm Big Bloom with ever watering, and FF Big Bloom + Grow Big every other watering.

Got the screen in and now it's a waiting/training game. Both the NL and the WW are pushing through the screen:

I tried taking a few clones two days ago from the WW, but they just wilted in the humidity dome under two PLL lights. Bleh. Going to have to practice I think :)

The waits over! I flipped to 12/12 a week ago. God this makes me horny.

IMG_5157.jpg

The White Widow takes up almost 2/3rds of the screen on the right, the Northern Light is the lefty. I didn't plan very well on how I trained them in the screen. If I could go back I'd do a better job, but I'm not going to complain with the results so far. Just crossing my fingers now. I've been ferting with FF Big Bloom.

Yes. I still am a little bit--mostly pushing the bigger fan leaves under to expose other budsites. I'd like to fill out as much of the bottom of the screen as I can, but I'm not going to get much more. There's a few lower branches that are close to hitting the screen that I'll pull up but they'll be behind enough that they won't be getting max exposure. I wish I could have put the screen lower--would have been able to fill it up sooner. There are a lot of lower budsites being wasted. Unfortunately I feel like I have the bare minimum amount of room under the screen to work with.
