Newbie about to get started- Question on lights and space!

Hi,

I'm about to start my closet grow. I'm growing a single plant in a 5 gallon pot with M3 soil mix. The seed is Green House Seeds White Widow.

I have been told that getting a 4 bulb t-5 is great for the veg stage, and to flower with a 1000 HPS. My concern is that my closet is not that big- it's a walk in closet with no door- you know, the kind you have an a 1 bedroom apartment where it's "around the corner" of the room, if that makes any sense. I can post pictures if needed. I have heard that a 1,000 watt HPS is ideal but am thinking that I could use a 600? I have neve even seen these bulbs in person so I have no idea if HPS could be used for an area this small. I'm a little worried that these kind of bulbs will be too hot and overkill???

Also, I don't have any windows and will be relying soley on AC and oscilating fans.

Any tips that could help?

Thanks much!!!

Leo

LEDs mate. that's the way to go. No more heat issues, electric bills etc... yeah theyre pricey at first but cheap in the long run..and peace of mind you can go out and leave ya grow without coming back to a burnt down house...I know what I prefer.

1000W for a single plant in a closed !!! who told you to do that ?

maximum a 400W more like a 250W and a cool tube on it for sure, but as alpha wrote, look in to LEDs thats the perfect light for a small stealth grow, make next to no heat

I would look in to Hans panels for a single plant

http://www.bonsaihero.com/ledgrow-led-panel-80-watt.html

That will work for both Veg and bloom

T5HO are also great with less cost, but do use more power, make more heat, last less (bulb changes every year) and you really have to do good to get any near the results from the LEDs or a bigger HPS if its even is possible

Guys, thanks so much for your input, I really appreciate it!

Alpha, you're right in that the LED will probably pay for themselves by saving electricity, right?

Silence: The closet is not big, I will measure it and take pictures. It's at least 4x8 and 9 foot ceiling. No vents, BUT, as I said, there is no door and is "connected" to the bedroom.

Slipon: Would ONE LED panel do the trick? What kind of quality buds will I get with a good seed strain/good soil and just one LED panel? What kind of ratings do I need to get for an LED (that is somewhat cost effective)? Watt, etc? I'm in no hurry to plant and want to think long-term here! Can one LED panel support 2 plants in the future?

Finally, will ONE plant cause an odor issue? (I hope this doesn't sound silly). I just want to grow enough for myself.

Thanks so much!

not LED's, they are annoying and lack intensity.

LEC's (Light Emitting Ceramic) are the new hot shit, WAY better than LED's imo for small spaces. Start with these and you wont have to fuck with Heating and Cooling, your two biggest indoor banes.

One LED panel will do the trick, for the one plant you wrote you where going to grow, if you want to grow more plants at the time I would get multiply panels, one might cover two smaller plants (maybe add a CLF or two at the end) two would for sure cover two or 3 plants maybe even four with some work

If you want to grow more then a plant or two I would maybe look in to some bigger panels like Apatche or Area-51

I use something similar and get similar results as my old 600W HPS would, with 25% less power used and next to no heat to fight

here is what I have going now (Skunk 1# from Seedsman)

Never heard of LEC's. And yes. One plant has a goods amount of stinks. Now on one hand some strains are known to have less stink. I don't know about your WW though. My basement grow is 30' away from my front door and one story below it. I smell it whenever I enter my home from work.

Slipon: I agree, I just need one LED panel light. What specific model should I get for about $250 or so. I'm in Florida.

Your plants look great. I doubt if I'll grow more than one plant, but if I do, I'd just get another panel, right?

Have you gotten good results with LED's or is this your first batch?

Will one plant make my closet smell? (White Widow)

agree, need a ventilation/filter combo to clean the air

vent.jpg

a must, and as important as the light, tho with LEDs or T5s in a small closed you can probably do with a small 4 inch budget ventilation/filter, not like with a 1000W HPS where you minimum would need a good quality 6"

Dirty: Wow, how many plants do you have? Does anyone know if White Widow smells? How can I combat the smell if I live in small 1BR apartment? I don't have guests but you never know, right? Does the smell only start when they flower? God, I don't know anything about growing! Wish these morons would just this legal already. Oh, forgot, there's no money in doing that, lol.

yes thats the good thing about Hans panels, or any LEDs, can always add more, I did :D

And its quality, you can't buy em better, bigger and more powerful maybe, but for one plant its IMOO the no1 in LEDs

his new light is on 80W and was just released this year I believe, a upgrade of his old 65W

http://www.bonsaihero.com/ledgrow-led-panel-80-watt.html

that one in a small 2x2 ft scrog with one plant is what I would do, with good genetic, some patience (6-8 weeks veg) and a bit of experience and luck it could easily provide 3-4oz maybe more if you do some DWC or some kind of hydro

tho as your in florida you might want to look in to sum thing more local, also if money is tight as his 80W panels will cost you 265$ + 50$ in shipping

maybe Area-51 small panel

http://a51led.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=65&products_id=191

thats more local and 285$ and I believe shipping is free, that also give great service and warranty and there products is also in the high end with quality inside

And yes I had about 6 or 7 full grows with em, the last year, before I grew with a 600W HPS

here is my thread with most of the LED grows

https://www.rollitup.org/led-other-lighting/644468-fist-led-grow.html

And YES !!! one plant can stink up a hole house, don't take odor control lightly unless you live alone on a island at the Florida cost and you can't smell shit yourself

Light, air circulation, odor control, a good grow medium with Nutrients to fit and some good genetic is IMO a must or its a wast of time, unless you just want to use a few months to get a few grams of flimsy buds if you ever finish

And remember to do the research

Here is a nice place to look up stuff, helped me a lot in the start

Slipon, thank you so much! My only concern now is the smell! How can I filter out the smell of my grow area when I have no windows and no vents? I can't make a hole in the wall. Should I make a little tent or something?

Slipon, there is no way I can drill into the wall or make a vent. Is there another way to clean the air?

if its a wooden door ? use a 4 inch Cup drill on a screwing machine, and drill 3 hole`s in the door, one at the top (for the out take ventilation) and two bottom (passive intake holes for fresh air)

then save the disc, once you need to move you put dutch tape at that back side of the hole`s and place the disc`s and use filler to secure em, then when dry, remove the tape and use the filler from that side as well, then paint the door agin, a few hours and you need to know they are there to spot em

Two plants in flower now. But when i started to notice it was when the one was just in flower. It goes away when your presence is in the house, or you just become nose deaf to it. But really though when your in the house, your cooking etc and that helps.

But yes do not take odor control lightly. I do because I can, and its also winter. But in the summer im not sure if ill grow because of that very same reason.

you never heard of LEC's because you are behind the times. Phillips put unheard of $ into the development of these bulbs, just came out last year. full spectrum, marginal heat.

Oh i agree i am!! Still in my first grow, and only using CFL's. As soon as i start smoking my harvest when the time comes, ill be using my savings and buying actual grow lights. Lol. Ill start looking into those LEC's now.

other suggesting is to make a fake "door" your self, maybe a frame with panda film, and place it on the inside of the closed door, so you can close the real door if you need to hide it, or a tent yes, but no matter what you do need both ventilation and odor control, with out fresh air (witch also contain Co2 the plant need) you plants won't thrive no matter what light you get or how good your genetics are, and with out a filter you will need a ozone generator or lots of OnA Gel to hide the smell, but then you will still need some kind of ventilation
