Newbie challenge: smallest growbox ever

Hi everyone,

I'm a chilean newbie attempting to build a tiny growbox (really tiny), mainly because I live with my parents and I've got to keep this as a secret (so no odors nor noises either). This is my first everything here. First post, first plant, first growbox. I've been thinking about this for the past few weeks and my project is now on the go, so I wanna let you know what I've done and what I've planned for the future in order to get the proper advises, let me start with what I've done:

I came home a few weeks ago and found myself procastinating my duties (i'm an agronomy student), so I found myself a better activity and came out with what's now my growbox:

WP_000889.jpg

This is a very small car cooler I won at McDonald's for buying a BigMac. Stripped everything apart from it (conserved some electrical connections and the stock fan), found a small wooden box that would serve as my soil container and drilled holes across them to let the water drain easily.

WP_000881.jpg

In such small growbox I really had to care about the lights size, so after looking for some cheap (cost is also an issue for me) CFLs, I concluded that 3x12W was the best possible option. I found 2 of these in my house (one 2700k, one 4100k) and bought one more at the store (6500k). I did a 3 socket parallel connection and got it right (I used the same wire entries that came with the cooler). For ventilation, I took the stock fan that came with the cooler and placed it as an extractor with no need of making any additional holes since it fitted perfectly with the one that came with the cooler, for intake I just took a piece off from the top and I'm letting the air come in that way (it also helps to keep the lights colder). To keep it silent, i connected the fan to a potentiometer I had in some old PC speakers, I also used the same wire connections available in the original cooler (you can see the connections and the fan dimmer in the ugly picture below).

WP_001102.jpgWP_000888.jpg

Those white ropes you can see in the picture I thought them as a way to tie the plant, now I figured out that LST is much easier with metal cables, so they're not gonna be used by now. For reflection I just used common aluminium paper. For the odors, I'll be using a tiny carbon filter I found (it's a replacement for an odor-free WC) for US$10, which I'll install when smell becomes an issue. I also bought a timer at the local store for obvious reasons.

WP_001099.jpg

Now, that's my setup. Total cost was around US$20 for the growbox (i recycled many things), let's get to the other part:

I bought some seeds from Delicious Seeds I found in a store here in Santiago (they're kinda hard to get in Chile). The strain is called La Bella Afrodita (they were 3xUS$32):

WP_001097.jpg

For the soil, I bought a 1:1:1 mix of perlite, humus and peat for US$3 (2.5Kg). This was really one of the hard parts: space is so limited i also had to limit my soil volume, so I placed a half cup over the soilmix in order to give the plant a better depth for its roots (otherwise it was gonna get vertically rootbound too early). I'd say total soil volume in my growbox is around 1L.

Last week I started germinating the seed and I moved it into soil yesterday with only the "bluer" (4100K and 6500K) CFLs on. It's getting 24 hours daylight and I think it's doing well, here I've got some pictures from yesterday and today (day 2).

Day 1 (seedling didn't want to open the cotyledons)

Day 2

Day 3

Day 4

Now, the main purpose was to have a very low-profile growbox that works. So far so good, it's really unnoticable as I've placed it next to my PC and noise is no issue (nor light), gotta wait for the smell to come. My growbox is located to the right of the computer case, behind the drawers:

Well, hope you like it and that you could help me out with some advise. And also apologize me if my english is not so good (haven't written in a long time).

wow, lots of thought and planning! I like that!
You should be able to grow some decent nuggs if you take your time with it.
easy on the peat..it can retain excess moisture sometimes...
I would also keep an eye on your temp...it may get hot in there..

but off to a GREAT start!!

a botle of sugar water with yeast should provide enough co2 for that sized box.
I always see these grow boxes but see very few of them actually make it to flowering, so if you do, please keep this thread updated

Thanks! I didn't know about moisture retention in peat, I think actually it may be good since my soil drains off pretty quickly due to its lack of depth, I'll go easy on irrigation anyways. I'll look for a termometer so I can get the temps, I think it actually is a bit hot so i'm trying to keep the fan at max speed.

I'm thinking on getting Biobizz Bio-Grow for veg, any other similar product i should consider? And when should i start feeding my plant?

I thought about the CO2 issue and couldn't find a solution, i'm definitely gonna check out what you say, thanks.

I'll keep the thread updated wether it makes it to flowering or not ;)

The yeast method may work for a small box...
I did this for a while.... opening windows to exchange air when possible does a WHILE lot more!

The popular one on here is Fox Farms... They have a basic package of three nutrients.
one primarily for veg, one for flower and one to use throughout....

Fox Farms: Big Grow, Tiger Bloom and Big Bloom
anything similar will work for you.

High N in veg... High P&K in flower .... and a soil conditioner. <--usually liquid bat guano and earthworm castings with trace minerals.

if and when you get nutes... start at 1/4 strength.... it's very easy to burn young plants... or any plants for that matter!

happy growing!!

Wicked little setup man, well thought out and well executed. My only suggestion is to get that plant up closer to the light, you'll want it about 2 inches from the top of the seedling otherwise it will stretch :) hope it works out mate!!

actually, plants can consume a lot more co2 than is available in fresh air and that is why adding more co2 is a good idea and for a small area like that a simple co2 setup with yeast and sugar, or vinegar and bone meal is all that is needed

Except that the small amount of CO2 you produce with one of those will get blown out by your exhaust fan. Even a little PC fan is going to be pulling all of the air out of that space a few times a minute.

Day 3 update, she's looking stronger but i wonder if she's stretching towards light, what do you think? I decided to give her a rest and changed the timer from 24/0 to 20/4, she woke up like 5 hours ago.

Sadly, trying to get her closer to the light is too hard without modifying the growbox.

Day 4 update. I think she's not stretching, just getting bigger :D

I also placed the tiny carbon filter into a EPS piece i shaped in order to fit the extraction hole. I'll be placing it in its final position once smell becomes noticeable. This carbon filter was supposed to last 6 months but I contacted the company and they set that those 6 months were tested under normal WC usage (say the carbon filter works only a couple times a day for a few minutes). I already bought it so I'll be posting about how efficient and durable this thing actually is.

I wanted to update my first post but I just noticed I can't edit it anymore. :(
Wish I could do it to keep the thread well organized... anyway, day 5 update:

I did a gif animation of the first 8 days:

I will consider 12/12 but not yet I think, want to do LST later and get the max out of that space.
