i have been thinking of trying my hand in the whole indoor growing thing, but it would have to be small scale. So i was at my local home improvement center and they had some 70w hps and 150w hps and i was thinking of using the 70w. My question is will this be enough for one maybe two plants? also what about those quartz halogen lamps, the ones workers use, are those useable? they are like 500w...anyway thanks in advance.

stay away from the halogen - they are too hot and too inefficient compared to any other light. there are details in FAQ on lighting choices.

Do some research into CFL and Fluro grows ... Will have less problems with heat. 70W would be enough for 1 or 2 small - mid sized plants, but I think you'd see the benefits of the 150 pretty quick. On that sized scale I'd recommend going with a CFL grow or possibly standard fluro depending on what sort of space you're thinking ... Use the search feature, do a bit of research into it and see what you reckon would work best for you and your situation.

Hmm, what home improvement store was it? I've never seen any real ballast and hps/mh grow lights there.

Never use halogen!

Go with the 150W, you will actually have less heat than the flouros overall as HPS is the most efficient light method there is. I have tried going cheap once long ago with two 70 watt HPS lights for 2 plants, the bud was loose and the yield was sad, 400 W HPS really woke things up.

Halogen will cause your plants to shrivel and die in 15 minutes, do not use halogen!

Anything organic

Fox Farms Light Warrior for seedlings.

and

Fox Farms Ocean Forrest for after transplanting seedling.

That's what I use.

But if you can't pick those up, a nice MG soil with out lots of time released nutes is good.
