Newbie in need of some schooling!

Hi all, just recently joined RIU as I have been abusing the free and useful info getting passed around by everyone on here Any how I posted yesterday about some problems that started a week back. Bringing me to this site looking for a diagnosis I ended up thinking it was mites an or thrips ( little white spots turning yellow, and some wierd indented patches on top of the leaves). Bought a pyrethrum based squirt and some diatomaceous earth applied to no avail. More patches, and indentations discolouring from dark geen to yellow. Seen on a post on here it could be lock out or nute burn as I'm grown in coco and may have over fed them. Have tried 2 half strength feeds since then and one today but problem is still there and possibly still getting worse... Any help or info would greatly be appreciated. Any questions don't hesitate to ask. Peace

My first piece of advice is to ditch the coco, looks like ph issue and thats what is so common with coco. If someone told you to start your first grow with coco they need a kick up the ass. You have to constantly adjust the ph in coco when you water. Soil almost always stays in the right range! Go buy some premium soil and transplant unless you have a really good meter and are confident you can stay on top of the ph issue. I've been growing a little while now did coco once and ran away from it just as quick, it really is more for the advanced grower not first timers.

Agreed.. Coco is a bit of a challenge. You MUST add CalMag and PH your nutes.

If it's not PH then let me ask this "When you shake your plants do you ever see tiny little gnats flying around? These little bastards will eat the undersides of the leaves. If it is gnats then keep going with the pest control and keep reading because there is a lot of info about that issue.

More info please? What nutes, how much, how often, ph, etc. etc.

Second piece of advice is dont throw cures at it until you are confident you know the diagnosis, you can kill yer lady really easily by lobbing hailmary's at it.
Make sure you know what it is yer looking at before you try to fix it. Ive done it myself so thats experience speaking.
Lots of knowledgeable growers here ( im just a student) so just keep asking and reading you'll get there! By the way did I mention ditching the coco? Lol

Haha I best turn around now for that ass kicking (coco was my choice after seeing decent results). But I'm at the bottom of a very steep curve is I quickly found out. Having to buy extras like ec/ppm pen, ph tester (liquid drops only). Gonna stick it if my ladies can cope but contemplating soil next run.

I thought about the cal mag but wasn't sure if needed is I was using tap water 7.0ph let sit for 24hrs. Thanks for reply

All canna line a+b, rhizotonic, cannazyme. Bloom and pk13/14 (when/if needed)

Canna coco professional plus
Following Canna schedule of their website a+ b 23ml/ 10litres of water 20ml/10 ml rhizotonic, 25ml cannazyme, ( tap, left to sit for 24hrs). Ph'd down to 5.8 -6.0. Fed every day..Half strength last few days to see if it helps the problem.

Hear hear my friend. Sound advice! hence why I found myself asking rather than browsing and self diagnosing. Thought it was pests at first but as it's developing and with advice of here it's looking ph/ nutrient problems. I did notice that's phd my solution to 5.6 ish but by the time I few 24hrs + later it's has risen to over 6.0 needing more ph down. Maybe some can elaborate more. Thanks all picking up Some decent advice

Well this how it all started haha, little white and yellow spots near leaf ends. Bought a x60 jewels loupe to
Look for eggs and bugs. No avail. Treat with a pyrethrum spray and sprinkled some diatomaceous earth as prevention but problem digressed into these indentations and yellow patches. Cheers for reply

Are you running to waste (not recycling nutrient solution) if not u should be, coco is very tricky when you're recirculating (not impossible). Coco isn't unheard of as a beginners medium but you do need to know how it acts and how to work with it. Are you using canna coco nutrients? Or hydro/substra or Aqua.

Yeah, using canna rhizotonic cannazyme and canna a+b.. Nd yeah, drain to waste. started of at 10% runoff but due to more research, I'm getting 20-30% runoff.

ok, how long had you been feeding 2.3ml/L before the problem arose ?
Only reason I ask is it looks like salt deposits that have been stored in the leaves and burned through, I'm not the best person at diagnosing these things but il try n help.

Are you using the hard or soft water base nutrient?

Have u flushed since recognising the problem?

Check the ec/ppm of the run off. If it is the same or only slightly higher than the feed you're not over feeding, if it's lower then you are under feeding, and if it's much higher then you are over feeding.

Blue brother, many thanks for the replies and time. Have been feeding 2.3ml/L for approximately for 2 weeks then this last current week dropped down to half strength for last 3 feeds. Salt build up could be a possibility as last week inlet the coco run fairly dry ( first 2 inches of coco dry) and read prior to that I shouldn't have let it run that dry. Out of curiosity last night I did test my runoff ec going in was 0.9 but coming out at 1.3. Water is about 140ppm out the tap. Hard or soft nutrient base? I've never flushed with plain water only 3 half doses. Thanks again

Check run off from that last flush, it should be considerably less, like I said aim for equal ec going in and coming out, that means that the plant is taking in nutrients and water in equal parts. Yeah letting coco dry out is a no no imo you want to be periodically flushing away old nutes in place of new nutes. This is made harder when the salts are able to dry out and form a build up because next watering you need to hope and pray they dissolve again so they can exit the medium (which they never totally do). Canna hydro (what I use) comes in hard and soft water versions. Hard water from the tap usually contains more minerAls than soft water therefor the nutrients for each scenario differ slightly.

I'm lost haha... Ah I see nd as far as I'm aware.. According to the hydro dude at the local store n he said I was good to go with tap water long as I let it sit. Cheers again Breda, gonna give it another half dose feed again tonight and I'll check te runoff, hopefully like you say it should even itself out. I'll post back later with results

On a side note, scrap cannzyme and rhizotonic they're painfully inadequate. Replace with ewc tea. Get ur head around ur problem then research ewc tea
