Newbie with a heat problem

P.S. I posted the other message after I realized that the hoods couldn't be vented. I thought I was dead in the water at that point. I think I mentioned growing 8 plants in one of the first messages though.

Just checked prices on homedepot.com. I can afford one fan and one 25' duct. 4", 6", or 8", the prices are very close so I can get any of the 3 sizes.

Do you think it would help more taking hot air out or putting cold air in?

ok forget about the passive if you got a ac. Take some cardboard and duct tape and build somthing to hook the duct up to on the ac(get creative. Make a hole somewhere on bottom of the closet door and run the duct to closet from ac sealing it off. If you get a inline fan make a hole at top of door and exaust the hot air out. The inline needs to be up high as you know heat rises.

Sounds like a good idea, but do I just put the inline fan in the door pointed out, or do I have to buy a duct? Maybe I can cut a small piece from the 25' duct.

That's a nice looking fan and lord knows I can use the the carbon scrubber, but I can't afford the $120 right now. At home depot I can get a 25' section of duct and an inline fan for around $40.

I guess I can make a box around the AC with cardboard (I have more than I need thanks to the lights. lol) and use the duct to carry the air into the closet, the A/C unit will push the air through the duct itself. But on the fan, do I just get a 3" bit for cutting round holes (for the drill), drill the hole, and put the fan in the 3" hole in the door?

One more question kind of off subject. I've seen spiders in the house, hopefully the UVB lights will keep them away. But I've been hearing a lot about spider mites, are those actual mites on spiders, baby spiders, something that spiders farm (like ants and amphids), or something completely unrelated to spiders?

That inline fan is junk useless wont work. They just help the air flow in the duct it really isnt enough power to suck the air out. what i showed you is what you want. they are mesured by cfm (cubic feet per min). In a closet that size you would need a 6in but if you vent that ac in you can make do with the 4in. The uvb light get rid of em wont do nothing for you plant as for spiders they are you friend. i think you thinking of spider mites make sure you clean that closet very good.

I'd really like to get that fan & carbon scrubber, and HTG is actually where I bought my lights. But I can't afford it. If I spend much more, I'm going to have to flower the clones as soon as I get my hands on them so I can harvest in approx 2 months instead of 3. Unfortunately I can't work right now so I'm limited to current funds till this becomes an income.

On the spider mites, I'm sure the spiders wont damage my plant. All I've seen so far are hunters not web builders so I don't have to worry about spider webs getting into my buds either. I was just woried that where there are spiders there might be spider mites if you follow my meaning. Like where there's a bear cub you'll find a bear mommy.

The closet was pretty clean when I moved in, and I moved everything out of it when I started setting up. I vacumed but didn't spray it down with lysol or anything. Think I should? It has carpet, but that's about the only surface a bug can hide in.

1 Tbls of bleach to 1 gallon of water and wash the walls. If you can afford it get some doctor doom or safer insecticide its a aresol can. It is a pyrethrin wich is derived from the chrysanthemum flowers. spray the room down. safer is 8 bucks and the doom is 15 they both work. the last thing you want is a spidermite infestation they are a pain in the ass i just got done with a battle. fuckin WW3

I have to see how much the pete moss, blood & bone meal, and blooming fertizer is going to cost but I don't think $8 will cause much of a problem. Hopefully that and the duct will be the last things that I need to buy because I still have to spend $240 on the clones. But if I eat enough PB&J I think I can make it 3 months on what's left. As long as I have everything I need now and there are no expensive surprises that is.

I'll be improving my set up with each harvest untill I can open my own dispensory. That is if this no dick politician doesn't get this new law passed that would name one corporation to do all the growing and move distribution to the pharmacies. If that happens I'm fucked big time. Man I picked one hell of a time to get sick with something serious.

Thanks for all your help, I'd really be up a tree without it.

Hey, I have another question.

I got the A/C Jerry rigged and the duct running into the closet. I'm using one of these to check temp levels http://www.gokigc.com/Active_Air_Indoor_Outdoor_Thermometer_w_Hygromete_p/thmm0010.htm (it was the only one home depot had)

It's a dual zone thermometer. The outdoor temp is the temp at the probe (white wire) and the indoor temp is the temp at the unit.

This morning when I woke up the unit & probe were sitting on a counter and I noticed that even though the unit & probe were next to each other, they were reporting different temps. So when I got the A/C set up I put both the probe and unit under the lights to test the temp. It's giving me 2 different readings about 10 degrees apart.

Does this sound like a defective unit to you, or is the probe not accurate when used indoors? Do you know much about this thermometer?

sounds like a faulty thermometer. I have one of the sunleaves therm /hygr the large one... http://www.wormsway.com/results.aspx?t=prod&search=thermometer&cat=all&AC=1 My meter only has one probe its not dual.

Thanks, I just called home depot and found out they have mercury thermometers which is what I really wanted to begin with. They must hide them real good. lol

I think I have the temp situation fixed, I'll know for sure about 15 mins after I get back.

Oh, I finally found a local nursery today and spoke to a lady who sais she has a degree in horticulture, and she also grows. Says she gets a harvest in 6 weeks so I'm guessing she's a "sea of green" type of grower, but not sure.

Anyway I asked her about pete moss and she said that it's acidic with a PH balance of it's own, but the bag doesn't list a PH balance.

Have you used pete moss before and would you recomend it?

Thanks again, I'll be back in half an hour or so.

Peat moss will burn your plant. I recomend getting some foxfarm ocean forest and some perlite. 30% perlite and 70% ocean forest you will do just fine with that.

Yeah, I was afraid that it might burn the roots. I'll have to take it back tommorow.

The dirt I originally bought was ECO brand compost mix. I can return it still I think. Is the foxfarm chemical or organic? (I already bought all organic fertilizers)

Also, I can't find Neptune's Harvest locally, but the nursery carried bloomers with just about every rating. As long as I get a bloomer with a rating of 2-4-2 I should be OK, right? And was it 2-4-2 or 1-4-1. They had stuff there with much higher ratings as well, but I don't want to overdue it. Some stuff had ratings as hi as 30.

And dude, I don't know what I'm doing wrong with the temp. I have the duct running to the back of the closet on the floor about a ft and a half from the back wall. It's facing the back wall and I moved the floor fan in front of it to help improve the circulation. I also have the oscilating fan at the door pointing in, and it's about 74 degrees in the bedroom (I figured it would help). But it's still almost 90 degrees in there.

I'm supposed to put the thermometer under the lights to check the temp, right?

If I'm not placing the thermometer wrong then the only option I see at this point is removing lights one at a time till the temps right. What do you think?

P.S. Just thought of something else, if I take the duct and point it at where the plants are going (under the lights) with the floor fan in front of it I'm sure this will help lower the temp below the lights better, but will it hurt the plants?

Oh, and before I forget, should I mix the blood & bone meal in with the dirt or should I wait and disolve it into water during future waterings?
Which would give better results and which will be easier to flush when the time comes?

To tell you the truth i dont know if ffocean forest is organic or not. The therm that you got does it have a prob or not??? You are going to have to exaust the hot air out of the room in order to get the temps right especially with three lights. start with one and see what the temp is. Do some searching and try to find one of these for exausting the hot air http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc1vZ1xr5/R-100658973/h_d2/ProductDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053 you can jerry rig some duct to it like you did to the ac and exaust the hot air out. remberexaust on the to p intake on the botom. I wouldnt blow the ac right onto the plants might cause some problems.
