You get what you pay for. Personally I go for close to the top of the line equipment for my grow, because the last thing I want is a house fire. I'd get an old school core and coil ballast before i got that no name brand crap.

My main concern would be more about the warranty. If something goes wrong , who and how is going to fix problem.
If you have to send it back to San Gabriel, California to have it repaired for any reason ......... who pays for shipping and insurance ? Is that possible cost more than the light is worth ? How long will turn around time be ? You will have NO light in the mean time.

I would still have my old 150w hps as a backup. The one I linked has 30 days return shipping, and insurance is available. I saw one kit that had a 5 year warranty.

Regardless, I decided I don't want any bullshit so I just ordered a hps kit from HTG.

The bulbs won't last quiet a Year, but that shit works, I think you can get a 400w dimmable with two bulbs for $130-$135

I bought a 400w kit off of ebay about a year ago now, and I haven't had any issues to name of yet. I've had really good luck with mine. It's a Revolt ballast.

They work.. I used the no name brand china 1000W digital ballast for like 4 years, so they work but they dont compare to your good brands like Phantom, LumaTek , Galaxy etc .. I mean the good ballasts and light equipment are just so much better you can tell with your own eyes. However the no names are a cheap easy way to start and learn how to grow but if you plant to be in this for the long run then I would just invest in some good equipment.

Well damn, now I wish I could cancel my HTG order... haha oh well, I like the looks of their ballasts with the rubber feet and all.

Ballasts and fans are the kind of equipment where it's worth investing a little more cash. An extra 20 or 50 dollars will ensure you a quality, warrantied product that will function better than the offbrands.

Those cheap magnetic ballasts get HOT. Hydrofarm makes a good digital ballast, the Phantom. And quantum makes a good one. Look into those. They make them dimmable, so you can run it low while you want a 250, and next time you want to upgrade (you will) then you don't have to buy a new ballast.
