I have a tray style worm factory so it's a bit easier than with a bin but all you have to do to harvest your vermicompost is uncover the worm bed and shine a light. I use an overhead shop light; they hate it and go deep so you can sort of scrape up the castings layer by layer. With the screen style trays they just go into the one beneath. With a tote bin or smart pot you can even dump them out on a screen or maybe a tarp or something & separate them that way. If the worms have no easy escape they'll try to bunch together for warmth.I hope I am not bothering you resurrecting this old thread, but my ONLY question about composting and making my own worms is: once I have my compost ready for my pots, do I just grab at the black shit and worms and all throw it in my pots or tea bag to start brewing? How do I work around the worms? I have yet to see a single piece of info about this.
