Nutrients Question For Experienced Growers

Hello all,

This is my first post on rollitup.org, glad to be here as it seems to be full of great information.

This is my first outdoor grow, first grow in general. I've got some Holland's Hope seedlings and they germinated fine. I live in California so we're getting plenty of sun right now. I stuck the germinated seedlings in each of their own 8 inch pots using Fox Farms Ocean Forest soil. It's been about 3 days since the seedlings have been in their pots outdoors, but they're in the shade, not direct sunlight. The top of the soil is moist and I check regularly on it so it is not dry.

The guy at the hydro store gave me a guide to follow in regards to feeding the plants nutrients. I currently have "Fox Farms GROW BIG" fertilizer which I have not yet applied of course. In the guide, it says to give it 2 teaspoons per gallon of GROW BIG during week 2. My question is, does this most likely mean 2 teaspoons per gallon EVERY day during that 2'nd week? Or does it just mean to apply the nutrients 1 time for that 2'nd week? I don't want to over feed / under feed them. Any feedback is appreciated! :peace:

not an experienced grower. But you do not wanna feed them every day. Will def burn them. You usually feed them about every other watering with a 1/2 strength solution.

Correct me if i am wrong **********(Experienced Growers)

Thank you for your reply Mongala! That seems to make much more sense now. So what I'll do is mix the 2 teaspoons per gallon of nutrients with regular water when it comes time to feeding them per the schedule. I need to get a pH reader so I can get a good idea how much water would be necessary without over/under watering them in their current 8 inch pots. When I transplant them, they'll be going in 5 gallon pots.

If anyone has anything to add / advise, please let me know. Cheers! :joint:

I know your position bro. Was there a couple months ago. Trust me. Nutes are probably the most confusing thing when i first started growing. But once you start to understand them and how they effect your plants you will feel much more in control and less overwhlemed.

I'm doing pretty much the same but using FF Happy Frog. They were/are in 2 galls and not until week 4 did I start giving them Grow Big. The consensus from what I've read so far is that the soil is already nutrient dense, especially OF, that it is unnecessary or even excessive to begin supplements when the roots haven't even touched the "plate" in front of them. (i.e. no need to supplement Miracle Grow for 3 months) The GB is absorbed by the plant very quickly as opposed to having the roots seek out the nutrients in the soil.....virtual root injection.

Having said that, I hit them with 1 tspn/gal per watering (every 3 days) for the first 2 weeks (yeah so I went to every other watering every 2-3 days since I hit rollitup). They grew pretty rapidly with no indication of a nutrient "burn" and I'm happy so far. They are about 2 feet now, hybrids. Some pics from a couple weeks ago below....

Right on man! I love the pics of your plants! Beautiful so far. A friend told me it took his plant 2 days for it to break soil, but I'm assuming that was a different strain then the kush I'm doing. After the 4'th day, I may introduce them slowly to the sunlight a bit since they were outdoors in the shade only. I'm assuming the shade may also have something to do with why they haven't broke through soil yet. Thanks for your input! :peace:

Welcome to RIU :hump:

FFOF has enough "stuff" in it to last you at least 3 weeks. The grow big is used once during week 2 as the label states but dont use the entire 2 teaspoons. I would go a little bit less than one teaspoon and not until like week 4 like beyond stated.

A PH meter measures acid/alkaline in your water. Has nothing to do with the amount of water your using. Make sure you get a tester ASAP and ph your solution (after everything is mixed up) to approx 6.5

Thank you for clarifying! I'll look into a PH meter ASAP, now I understand exactly what the PH meter measures. Thanks again!:joint::peace:
