I wasn't aware it was banned but yes of course I think it is time someone started over turning these 19th century bans that discriminate.
Another interesting ban he removed was allowing people with the AIDS and HIV to enter the United States. Apparently during the mass outbreak of AIDS and HIV in the 80's we denied access to anyone who had the disease including doctors, scientists, patients and orphans.
Preventing doctors and scientists who could have been helping us find cures and working with the US to combat this disease instead we alienated them even after we were able to determine how it was spread.
I won't even comment GW's decision to halt research on stem cells.
I guess Obama is making change.

Will this be controversial? Does anyone think gays and lesbians should NOT be allowed to visit their partners in the hospital?
Will this this be controversial? Possibly.

We've got a hell of a lot more important issues to worry about right now. Oddly enough, it is the Teabaggers who are driving this point home.

As a result, the normal cacophony of protest from the Religious Right over this issue might be muted.

Plus, most rational people understand this has more to do with simple compassion that it does with gay versus straight.

I support the decision.

Man, you guys just over simplify the shit out of everything.

First, let me say that I agree with the notion that Gays, like others ought to be treated the same as any significant other.

The problem is that Obama is using Medicaid dollars to strong arm hospitals into doing as he wishes and that is a monumental problem. He is an elected official, not a King.

But that is what happens when the Government controls things. The guy who controls the money calls the shots - that's Communism.

As far as the actual issues of visitation and making calls for an incapacitated loved one, there are proper legal avenues for this. One can file a durable power of attorney assigning anyone they want to make medical decisions on your behalf in the event you can not. Everyone ought to have one.

As far as hospital policy on who can stay outside of visitation hours, that has to do with next of kin and hospital policy. In general, a spouse, parent, adult child, sibling or guardian would be allowed. Your friends might have to come during visiting hours.

Who you claim as your next of kin is probably something you could also specify in your DPOA or other legal document. A gay partner could probably just bring it with them - problem solved.

Anyway, hospitals need something to go on with regard to next of kin. They can't just let someone's partner of 2 weeks decide to pull the plug when the family says no.

So all in all, this is kind of a BS, smoke and mirrors non-issue. I am however very concerned with the way Obama seems to think he is free to issue edicts and bills of attainder like he is a dictator. Remember his firing of the GM CEO. WTF was that? This is more of the same. It is a total violation of the separation of powers - but hey, when you control health care you get to call the shots. Like I said, that's how Communism works.

So when the federal government says that a hospital can't have a policy of not treating black people or jews....is that communism? Or do you just really, really dislike homosexuals?

I'm oversimplifying again...

Word. I think we're pretty much in agreement here.

But I'm not so sure about what you're saying regarding the tea party. I know some of the groups are the same people who organized for ron paul in 2007, but the more I see of the tea party, the more I'm starting to feel like a lot of it is just the new disguise for run of the mill conservatives, including all their social issues baggage, including hating on gays and lesbians.

Ya, that's it. I'm just going to assume you are not very bright and are doing the best you can.

FYI, I'm pretty sure it was the COURTS who determined the anti-discrimination laws. Ah, but I'm sure concepts like separation of powers are too much for you - never mind.

T.E.A. Party = Taxed Enough Already Party. Nothing about social issues. Just my point: The Teabaggers remind everyone that there are more pressing essential issues right now.

Just what have you seen of the Tea Party that has not been distilled through organizations which vehemently oppose it?

You can show me a Teabagger with a misspelled sign, or making stupid assertions having nothing to do with high taxes; and I'll show you an outside agitator.

It amuses me that the Progressives fear the Teabaggers to the point that any individual or group who vocally opposes the Progressive agenda seems to be a Teabagger nowadays.
