hey everyone, I hope this works again. last time my question was about water and why it seems to be such a pain in the ass. I had a thread about it and I got a couple of answers then an argument ensued on my thread between 2 forum members and took over my thread and I could'nt get my question answerd well after that lol. So my question is what is good water to use for my grow with out having to worry about chlorimine and chlorine,But I dont want to spend hundreds on a water filter when my first grow has already spent me enough. im looking for a safe way to have water at a cheaper price rather then spend 120-250 on filters. ive heard distelled water will do the trick but thats 1.00 a gallon and god know how many gallons ill use in a grow. so yeah thats my dillema thanks in advance for any help

Grocery store reverse osmosis machines are everywhere if you are in the u.s. They are only about 30 cents a gallon and have a very low ppm. Very good for growing. A lot cheaper than distilled. Sorry about jacking your thread last night bro. 6.3-6.8 ph is what you are shooting for for soil. You can use water that is a little outside of that range if your soil has buffers in it like dolomitic lime. Water of neutral pH (7.0) will not alter your soils pH at all. Hope this helps.

I use tap water, but have to use "PH down" as it's around 9.25+ out of the faucet.
Save some gallon sized plastic containers (like milk or Sunny-D) and wash 'em out really well. Fill with tap water, then let it sit (open) for about 24 hours. Test the pure water before watering (no nutes) and regulate the PH as needed before the water hits the soil (I like somewhere around 6.5). If you are doing nutes, add the nutes to the water FIRST, then PH test it.
Simple!

ive hears most spring water like poland springs are like 7.0 ph not sure though
Don't worry about water too much unless you know yours is too hard. Do you have a lot of rust or calcium buildup around your faucets or toilet? If so then you definitely want to look into something besides tapwater IMO.

Before over-thinking the water issue, do you think commercial greenhouses spend a dollar on a gallon of water? No, they use it right out of the hose.

If you want to go a step further let the chlorine dissipate over night. If you have clorimine in your tap water that's a different story - it doesn't dissipate.

We're not raising tropical fish here, we're growing weeds!

Aerate/Age the tap water
This approach has long been used by aquarists. Fill a barrel or bucket with some tap water and let it sit for a day or two. In this way, the temperature will be close (room temp), and the chlorine will dissipate from the water. Adding an airstone or powerhead to create water movement speeds the dissipation of chlorine from the water. This is simple, cheap and very effective when dealing with chlorine.

If your water system uses chlorine, this is a great way to go. There might be times when you need to add some water right away, and don't have any already aged. So that's one problem with this method. The bigger problems is that this approach doesn't work for chloramines. Thats one of the main reasons that chloramines are being used instead of chlorine. It's more stable, and won't dissipate as easily. Some report that aging chloramine treated water for a week will eliminate the chloramine, but several water treatment websites suggest that isn't always true.
If your water treatment plant uses chlorine, and you decide to use this approach, you might want to regularly contact your water supplier, so that you are aware of any planned switch to chloramine. Slowly, more and more water treatment plants seem to be switching to chloramine.

pH is very easy to alter. That should be the least of your concerns when it comes to your water. Like Greencross said, if there are chloramines in your water you may not want to use it. If it's extremely hard water you may not want to use it. Otherwise go ahead and give it a try. Grow like 2 plants and give one tapwater and the other distilled or r/o water and see which one does better. That should clear up any confusion about your water and most of all you will know for sure at that point which is best for your plants.
