Ok so I'm growing some bag seed with cfl's.mg.and all that jazz. After talking to a bunch of people about different soils and stuff, it's time to break down and start with a fresh set up and different plan. I'm going to keep my 4x4x4 with the cfl's to finish out the bag seed and maybe put some auto's in when they are done.I'm going to go ahead and order my 400w hps with ballast, roots organic 707,a bag of perlite, FF grow big, big bloom, tiger bloom,ph up and down, of course a ph tester and if i can find out how to check ppm,. I'm going to order some pineapple chunk, vanilla kush, and white widow (please give your input on these strains )Now to my question.Does this seem like enough light for a 4x4x6 box? Input on the soil and nutes. Thanks for all of your help guys and gals... RangerJ

i'd probably get a 600w and use a air cooled hood.(in fact i'd strongly advise to use one even if you go with the 400w. your soil and nutes sound good. when you first start feeding start small and work your way up. first one 25-50% strength of what they say on the bottle.

On a 4x4x6 I would go with a 400 or a short veg so you can grow under a 600. But you said auto so I would say 400. 72"-12"( light distance)-4"-6" (hooks and chain)= 4.5 feet of higth so you are still left with a 4x4x4 grow room.

Another thing. I currently have my box now painted with 5 coats of white paint. Should I stick with white paint since its cheaper or do reflective mylar?

Welll I'm going to do auto's in my 4ft box...So when I order the whole kit. Should I just order a 600w too? and I see they're different colors. What in a hps should I look for?

For a 4x4 I would go with a 250 or a 400. Any more heat will be to much if a factor. If you want a 600 auto might not be the way you want to go. Clones and sog would be better and triple your plants but you contol to veg and flower times.

Are all HPS bulbs the same? Or are there different spectrums?

I don't know much about them

Lumens are different but spectrums are close. And by close I mean to the moon close. Read up on the bulbs and deside. High watt means higher heat so farther from plant. Lower watt means lower heat so closer to plants. Lumens around the same or better some worse.

get a high output spectrally enhanced hps bulb. they are not that much more expensive than normal ones and all i use to grow with and highly recommend them.(well, i got cfls for sidelighting, but i mean in the hid department)

well, it depends on what your definition of "good enough" is. To me, no, thats why i use only the spectrally enhanced high output bulbs. However if you meant will they work then for veg it should be alright but i dont think i'd try to flower with it. you want red spectrum lighting in flower if you are going to use a normal bulb not spectrally enhanced. i'd get the spectrally enhanced bulb like i said before bro. if you want i can give you a link to a 400w one thats something like $30-$40 shipping included that i have used(not as in the bulb is used, lol, as in ive used the same brand of bulb from them.). Alright, i realized i havent explained the details yet. lol. here is why-1. It produces 55,000 lumens instead of the 50,000 from a standard hps bulb. 2. This is the big part. See plants are exposed to both red and blue spectrum light in nature, they have evolved to take advantage of that. You see plants have 2 types of chloroplasts that interact with light for photosynthesis. one of them interacts with the blue side of the spectrum and one with the red side. so if you use 1 spectrum you are just preventing your plant from reaching its full potential by not taking advantage of the energy production of the side of the spectrum not being used.

Yea I know about that...Like right now I'm on 6500k cfl's for veg and then switch to 2700 for flower. I just don't know much about the HPS...And yes I'd love the link to it
