When I used mg I fed once a week never full strength and always ended up with burnt plants. Less is more with mg.
Depending on the bulb, with fluorescents or cfl's they produce little to no heat so get them as close to the plant as possible. With hid's a foot to 18 inches, just hold arm over the plant does it get hot if so lamp to close.
