Any idea on how much W per sqr meter (or foot) is appropriate?. The eye protection was hard in place for the cob/cmh o0. Sometimes I still fuck up and look up directly into a co, It's like working around welders for the industry folk ;p.

Watts per square meter the wrong unit. Use a direct measurement of UV light.

Tubes exist that emit anywhere from 5% to 20% and even up to 80% or more of UV so act accordingly.

The best results come from plants that get UV even in veg, which hardens them off and prevents damage later.

Got welder flash from old cmh, glasses without side guards. Slightly to the rear of the bulb seemed to be the hot spot.

Do you have a decent link for more specifics on using UV?. I would appreciate that as I'd unlikely know what bs info is or not.

Oh I forgot. I little while ago a guy posted his results with UV, I didn't doubt his positive results, but I did question something. If you are using say 300w of UV and it has X/Y effect, would you not be closely served by swapping that 300w out for say cmh instead?. Maybe it depends entirely on the goal?.

But you said led weed is better again. And i have no excuse to not “upgrade”.

Just pokin’ fun. ;-)

When the leds get to a real 50% efficiency over hps i will have to consider the yield vs heat difference at least.


Only problem is real university agriculture testing is being done on discreet colored diodes.

The future of led is still mostly blurple. Only a few “white” diodes are needed apparently.

Have you seen this new Amare 8 bar the guy here is testing. Looks pretty damn sweet! Seems like it's got a nice mix of white and colored diodes. And I think it's a true 800watt led super evenly spread over a 5x5 area. I'm really interested to see how it works out.

The tech is starting to show. They are admitting the shortcomings of full spectrum diodes and adding needed colors. I always look at all the new stuff.

Michigan state university is adding just a little white to specific red, blue and green ratios. Other colors are in testing too.

I think in 5 years led will be plant specific like fertilizer.

CMH doesn't emit enough UV to make any difference. Again, X Watts isn't the right unit of measure; you need to divide by the amount of UV emitted by the lamp in question. I don't have any numbers memorized. Be sure to boost UVB; UVA isn't as effective and UVC is too damaging.

My personal experience isn't exhaustive but my best results have come from full spectrum LED chips at 3000K to 3500K.

Slow down your ventilation fan to raise temperature under LED and continue to pull the excess through your home for heating. It should serve both purposes well.

For someone who always looks at the new stuff that last statement is odd because it sounds about 10 years old. Led light recipes specifcally for different varieties and production stages are barely new anymore.

I am already maxed (minimumed) out on that. I usually add another lamp about now. Or run the hoods open and reroute the exhaust.

I figure if i could equal wattage with led and keep to my 18” over the canopy minimum canopy distance (or less) i could manage the heat like you suggest. And increase yield without decreasing quality hopefully.

But now we are talking some money and i only really needed ballasts to keep going like i am. I am considering them for a 4x8 shorty tent i got for my basement. I will buy over time for the tent as i need to insulate the basement some first. Its about 40 down there right now. Open basement side of hill.
