The grassy smell is still fumes from the chlorophyl hanging around. I won't jar them until that smell has subdued quite a bit, usually a week and a half to two weeks after harvest.
I probably leave more bud leaf on than most people but I think it helps protect the trichomes a bit better and those leaves are potent anyway. If you trim closer to the bud you might be able to shave off a day or so from the drying time. I like to dry on racks because stems hold too much moisture. Last time I let them dry inside a brown paper bag in a cupboard that's room temperature so around 70F give or take 5F and it turned out real nice.

my take on he whole drying/ curing is..... i air dry at least 2 weeks or until the stem will snap, then i seperate the buds from the stems and begin the curing process, open them during the day and close it up at night making sure to fluff the buds when i open the bags each morning. time and patience are still the key m8

I've always gotten the "hay" smell initially. I hang in a room with ventilation only for 5-7 days until crispy, then jar for a day or two (burping every 12 hours or so). After that, if they feel moist, I rehang them for a day and repeat the process. When they feel smokably dry in the jar after a couple of days, I close them up for a week. The resulting ganja smell then fills the room when I open a jar. Time to smoke!

Some good info floatin' around in this thread. My friend's recently harvested bud dried relatively too fast....he just harvested it on tuesday and the biggest bud already lost 50%(15.6g wet weight....6.9g last night) of its weight, so he went ahead and started jar curing....

I told him to get some orange peels and throw em in the jar and let the buds get more moisture and try to air dry em some more before you jar cure.....sound advice? Or should he just go along with the cure?

I think it might "recover" some moisture in the jars. I wouldn't add anything unless the bud is way too dry and brittle. In that worst case scenario I take a small piece of lettuce and leave it in the jar overnight. Just don't forget to throw the lettuce out the next day.

i use paper bags. about 4 inches deep and shake em several times a day. once they will break up and smoke then i put them in jars.

I've browsed a lot of threads in the "Harvesting and Curing" section, and one issue that

I have seen brought up a plethora of times, yet not a substantiated answer is freshly harvested bud that has an undesireable smell (hay, wet grass, etc).

So any of the experts out there that might want to shed some light on methods to combat this, prevent it, or is it just a part of the process...I'm

by no means an expert myself, I just gathered the balls to start a thread to finally have a roundtable discussion and try to come to a consensus on this issue. :weed:
THE GRASS/HAY SMELL IS THE RESIDUAL CHLOROPHYLL IN THE LEAVES/ BUD,AFTER DRYING. JAR CURING FOR ANOTHER 21 DAYS WILL ELIMINATE THIS SMELL TO SOME DEGREE.:weed:
