Outdoor 2010. Need help

OK, so I plan to grow outside in southeastern US, and need help on 2 things.

1) Drowning plant issue. Last year I grew all but one of my plants in 5 gallon buckets. And the one that was in the ground drown after the first rain. Anyone got ideas as to how to keep my plants from drowning? The ground around here is mostly hard clay. I planned on putting gravel under the soil for drainage, but someone said that was bad, any suggestions?

2) Good soil. Last year I just used store bought potting soil and added chemical fertilizer. But this year I want to start the soil off great. There are plenty horse and cow pastures around here that i bet owners would be willing to give me their animal shit from. But does anyone got a really great soil mix for outdoors? Or just Suggestions?

1) So are you growing in 5 gal containers or in the ground? I'm confused. If it's just 5 gals sitting on the ground, try to elevate them under a thin piece of wood so the saturated clay ground will not be in contact with your buckets. I don't see why gravel would hurt at all... it's just more coarse and will allow for better drainage. If you have the land and seclusion just build a raised bed... could you install a slotted drain pipe under the gravel to ensure it drains? Is the grow location at a high point where you could daylight a pipe to a drainage spot?

2) I've never grown outdoors, but FFOF seems pretty good indoors. I don't see why that wouldn't work. But if I was going to grow outside I'd just concoct one of those super soils (like subcool's) so you don't even ever have to worry about fertilizing... bat guano, fish emulsion, bone/blood meal, EWC, etc., all that shit.

Have fun. I need to start scoping for guerilla grow locations! The land around the old WWTPs are always nice! LOL!!

This year I want to grow in the ground, last is is the year I grew in buckets (to clarify)

Sounds good so far,,,, if only I knew where to get all that shit. There is a farmers market close by, but I dont know what all they sell.

clay is terrible crap to grow in !!!!! you have to amend the soil with sand and "shit" that has been thoroughly composted so as not to burn your delicate seeslings. to amend the soil you have to mix about 1/3 sand and 1/3 shit with 1/3 natural clay soil. you will need to have about 20 gallons of root space ie...prepared soil for each plant. that seems like alot but it is vital if you want fast growth and big yield. or you buy a truck load of potting soil and dig a 3' diameter hole 3' deep for each plant and fill the holes with the potting soil..... if you do that in the right spot you can use the holes every year. drainage is vital for plant health! happy gardening!!

go with an autoflowering strain ... seed the first batch and then throw em down like crazy... a bunch of those little fuckers wont peak anyones interest unless they walk right up on them. you can do 3 rounds even.

Bro, clay is terrible shit to grow in like mentioned above. You'd have to have a gravel base and a drain pipe if you're in an area that gets a lot of rain...

Clay holds water like and will saturate that roots and drown your plants.

Check this NRCS web soil survey site... may help you find a site with more suitable soils. There should be a map and then info on the soil consistency, drainage conditions, and topography. Good luck bro!!
