So, this is a home grown adventure here… and quite possibly the only 3 of their kind! Granted, the original seeds did come from a reputable seedbank and grew amazing plants - it has now crossed over into the hands of non-breeders like myself. A family member of mine had a Brother Mendel Auto that he was growing, along side a Zkittles Auto and a Gelato Auto. Well, long story short, the BM hermied on him and pollinated the other two plants… So, he was left with loads of mixed, auto seeds. (Not real sure why he mixed the seeds, but that’s a whole different story in itself)
** Im going to name these plants in numbers, so that they’re easy to keep up with #1, #2, #3, and #4. Just bare with me! **
Well, after seeing the massive amounts of pot he got off these autos, I was intrigued. So When it started to get real warm out, I decided to give a few of them a shot, outside, in good ‘ol nature (more like my front porch, but u get the idea! Sunlight.) Now that it’s legal in my state of VA, having 4 plants next to your tomato pots on the porch is NOTHING - and I love it! So I germinated 4 of the best looking seeds, out of the 10 or so seeds that he had given me. I must say, so far so good!
This is their living environment:
- Completely outdoors, nothing but natural sunlight/air (only brought under porch during bad storms)
- Started in peat pellets, transferred to Fox Farms Happy Frog Soil in small pots
- Transferred again (into final Airpots) once I had a few leaf sets and they were well into veg. They went into 25% FF HF (top half) and 75% (lower half) Fox Farms Ocean Forest w/ a mix in of slow release 5-5-5 organic fertilizer
- They aren’t deficient whatsoever that I can tell, so that’s all they’ll get until they show me otherwise. I am going to start the Fox Farms Tiger Bloom at a super diluted rate, and build up as the plant progresses
- They do get a dose of SuperThrive every week with a watering
- Temps have been very hot, around 90 degrees, but I live on the Chesapeake Bay, so the breeze coming off the marsh seems to keep everything perfect. Also I tend to keep a fan on them during those hot days where there’s not a constant breeze. Night time temps are usually in the upper 70’s and breezy. (I tell ya what. A heat loving photo would probably thrive in this environment with a small green tent or something… more on that later!)
So it’s very hard to tell what strain is what so far, but 2 of the plants are def from the same mother/“father” (#1 and #2), as they’re the biggest and nearly identical. Whereas another is definitely a completely different strain (#3), as it’s growing nicely, but just showed it’s first pre flowers and is not the same shape as the other two. And then the last lil feller, well, she’s just a runt and it just now going into real veg (#4), I assume that’s another strain as well - considering the dramatic difference in growth and structure. So HOPEFULLY I have all 3 strains going! The two biggest sisters have already shown massive pistils/preflowers and are really going along nicely. #3 actually decided to show its first pistils today! So we def have 3 female autos on our hands, minimum. Just need to keep them happy now and pray some bad genetics didn’t get passed along…
These were all germinated exactly 3 weeks ago, today. I’ve only grown a few autos in my life (SEVERAL photos), so I’ve made a few mistakes so far. First was transplanting. The ones that are in the Airpots have been transplanted 3 times. The other, only twice. I decided to LST one of the bigger, faster growing sisters, while in its airpot. Whereas HER sister is getting no special treatment whatsoever, in a plain ol pot, with no LST, pruning or anything. I’m going to see what the pot and LST do to make a difference in the two, as they’re practically twins. #3 was actually topped 2 days ago, because it hadn’t showed sex yet and was still growing nicely, so I decided to test it out and it’s coming along nicely as well. Recovered very quickly, but also showed it’s first pistils 2 days after topping. Glad I did it when I did!
This is all just a big experiment, by an inexperienced outdoor auto grower - who happens to be an experienced, indoor, photo grower! And that’s that! I’ll try to keep this updated as much as possible throughout the grow, I’m going to try and stuff the last 3 weeks into one post full of photos. The rest will be updated on schedule. Sorry if the photos are scattered, from here on out, it’ll be much more organized - promise!
