Outdoor Bagseed 1st Grow Ever

Here are the week 2 pics.

Everything seems to be going fine, going to water again tomorrow. They took the last feeding just fine, pruned a few small yellow leaves, but otherwise have some healthy plants.

The 5 are going into 5 gal containers next week. I have the soil mix cooking for a week. I am going to leave the other one alone for now in the larger pot. I have plenty of soil mix to use.

Two more waterings of plain water (including tomorrow's) and then I will hit them with some more nutes. This time it is going to be fish sauce, a little more water soluable and less powerful. I figure see what a normal dose does than up it from there. I will reserve the bat guano for later unless someone has better advice.

Thanks man, I hope I get a respectable harvest. I have a closet open...I am considering going indoor hydro for a continuous flow of bud, like 2 vegging, 2 flowering, and a mother...I have a unique spot for this.

Today I repotted 3 into 5 gal buckets. White buckets lined with black trash bags...keeping it cheap y'all.

Will re-pot 2 more tomorrow, planning on leaving the plant in the big container alone for now.

I have a new soil mix consisting of this crazy ass "soil mix" from OSH, some potting soil, compost, worm castings, blood meal, bone meal, lime, extra perlite, and actually a touch of vermiculite. I have a ton of soil left to do the other two and at least a third (good thing). I hit them with only water and Vitamin B additive.

I have some yellowing lower leaves and I am certain that it is due to excess nitrogen...only half the plants are affected, but since I have seen people's pics on this very site, I can tell you that lower yellow leaf creeps and is not good...it is not the end of the world and thus I have repotted. I attribute to too much particulate fertilizer going onto the top of the soil duing feeding (i.e. bits of blood meal and bat guano and worm castings and compost)...so it was like every watering was a feeding.

The plants are otherwise healthy and the 3 took the transplanting quite well. Temps are cool and the plants have more room to grow now.

It should be noted that the root balls of the plants that I had previously transplanted into a "soil mix" (i.e. the toothpick marked) had root balls twice as big as the ones that did not have the toothpick (it's in the first thread's pics, follow the links previously)...those only had "Miracle Grow Potting Soil" (NOT the organic stuff - which is way more better) straight (and extra food as stated above and in the first thread). I had to replant one simply because it outgrew it's cage, it literally started hit ceiling of the situation, but that has been resolved. This is a very important note to outdoor growers - amend your soil with the good shit, it pays huge divedends it terms of root propagation.

Here is my mix:

1 part soil mix (has all kinds of funky shit like rice hulls and coconut hair and shit)
or
2 parts Miracle Grow ORGANIC Potting Soil (this is good shit - not normal miracle grow)
1 part compost
2/3 bag of worm castings (from Wal-Mart - can't go wrong no matter how much you use)
1/4 cup blood meal
1/4 cup bone meal
1/2 cup lime (can't possibly go wrong using lime)
1 small bag perlite (big bags are fucking huge)

I repeat...this is the shit...

Sex is still unknown, I am praying I have 6 healthy ladies, nothing is showing yet. I estimate these plants to be but 7 weeks old.

Photos on Sunday

Repotted two more yesterday evening. One is doing great, the other did not take it so well, nothing it won't be able to get over, just a little "down" - been so since yesterday but otherwise healthy.

Pics will come on Sunday evening - that will be the weekly pic parade.

I must note that the bottoms of those re-used coffee containers we quite moist, I believe that certainly the conical end shape of a traditional clay pot keeps that bottom moisture in check...I see where I "could" have the same issue with the new modified buckets...it is noted.

I still do not know the sex of these, they are still relatively short. I have seen the "Outdoor Monsters Thread" which is impressive.

OK, pictures were taken, but I did not post them as promised.

I believe the plants are beginning to preflower in that the most microscopic of little buds are starting to form on half of them. Pray for females.

Contrary to the sticky, I encourage all posts to the journal...do not hesitate.

At current estimation, I believe I have at least two females and one male. This is based on the preflowering that is occurring in little bits, you really have to strain your eyes, but you can kinda tell on one that a big old side boner is popping out...little balls are all up on the tip of the cola...they are tiny, but yeah, I think it is not a good sign...

On the other hand, I am fairly certain that two are indeed female.

I think that I am going to take this indoor as well. I know it prolly wasn't the best idea to but them in buckets...I fully intended to carry this through the outdoor and just let mother nature take care of it. But, I am thinking discretion is the better part of valor on this one...besides, I got me a closet all cleared out, about 8 square feet in all, but I can easily fit four, possibly five buckets into this...got me 2 150w HPS on the way.

So, I will be running 2x 150w HPS in about 7 square feet, I figure that is roughly 38000 lumens over 8 looking at about 5400 per sq ft, and I believe that 3000 is a good rule of thumb for nice flowering(?)...I think I have plenty of light...it's a closet.

I will have the closet all mylar'd up so it will be a good show.

How's that sound?

Down to three, I think I have 1 more male by the early look of him and maybe 1 female, the third is decidedly not sexed at all, no little bumps yet, another week for certain...I should be getting my closet ready soon.

Going indoor, going HYDRO, not much else to say.

Bagseed pretty much turned out male. Just went out and got me some clones. Now I can tell you, they certainly appear to be female lol.

This is my temporary setup until the HPS and mylar get here. The CFL's are just to keep them happy for a few days. I will reuse the CFL's for clones as well.

Ebb and flow setup to be realized tomorrow. PICs to follow. Discretion better part of valor, taking it inside and lower key.

OK, so yeah, the last two seed started plants turned out to be females, how wonderful. From 14 hopefuls to 2 finalists (plus 3 ringers to round out the mix).

I have gone back on my word, not going hydro any time soon, staying with the soil until I get the hang of how weed grows a little better. Besides, I have a TON of great soil, and from what I have seen so far, it looks like it is just fine to grow it, so whatever...don't hate just yet, I will go hydro in the near future, but not just right now.

Yeah, my clone setup is a little ghetto right now (still) but I am working on a homebrew cfl diy hood.

the flowering chamber is good to go. Heat tests reveal essentially cool to the touch hoods with a vent fan and extraction fan running. I simply cut a hole for a fart fan and mounted it sideways...yeah I am "hood" like that.

So the plan is to make some clones either this evening or tomorrow and send the ladies in for flowering either monday or maybe wait until the weekend so I can keep an eye on it at first (a little better).

Here is my homebrew CFL fixture and the clones

It is completely ghetto...but it covers the entire grow area more or less, so a different planting setup may be in order, but I am learning as I go...

It cost a little under $11 to make (maybe more if you don't already have a bunch of PVC laying around, maybe less if you have some spare roofing flashing handy.

I paid good money for some nice hps hoods (x2 150w) they are in the flowering chamber.

I am going to mount a cloning chamber as well and be pretty set.

Basically the depth and width cuts the light out of the top of the chamber pretty good so all light is just bouncing around below it.

LOL I only had ABS cement laying around, my PVC cement dried up so I tested the stuff and it seemed to hold so I said fuck it and used it.

OK, here is a lineup of what is going down:

As you can plainly see from the clone shots (compare them with photos just 2 weeks prior when I bought them), the clones are growing like crazy under cfl.

I put the not as healthy female into the HPS chamber and bent her over...oh yeah she liked it...I started with the HPS at 18" and the plant really dug it, it was reaching up big time to the light.

The other female is shooting sprouts like mad...and just doing fine outdoors. I am letting it mother a bit and I am going to take a stab at cloning them. I have what I need to clone, but I am debating the switchover to hydro (again...)

We'll see first things first, the mother needs to get bigger offshoots for me to start thinking about it...

Last week I broke the tip of the healthy mom. I rushed it to trauma center and cloned it. The clone seems to be alive and the mom sprouted 2 new main colas...voila, never too late to top them I suppose. I only topped the one, and it was by accident at that.

I took some more clones they seem to be doing OK so far. I still have the baggie domes on them though.

4 in the flower, sealed some light leaks on the chamber, built an air intake light baffle, 12/12 we are rockin'.

Mothering an AK for future consideration, if these clones take quick, I am going to clone everything I can take off the one I still have in veg.

No new photos, not much to show new. When we see some flowers I will post shots, and/or if the clones get nice and beefy in the next couple of weeks, but probably no new posts for a couple of weeks while we let flowering kick in, I am doing my best not to disturb the ladies much.

It seems that the closet is doing truly better than expected and my only consideration is if I should've stuck 2 250's (or at least 175's) up there. Alas, I am certain that the light is fine for the area, but the plants do seem to enjoy the HPS.

Of course, shortly after I wrote my last entry, the broken top that I thought for certain had "took" rotted right at the point of entry of the soil. Lesson learned: soil was KEPT way too moist.

Clone soil needs to start out very moist then be kept moderately moist.

So I needed to take another clone off the outdoor to hopefully have two healthy clones of the bagseed (which appears is going to be some fine marijuana). So I took another piece off it, and hopefully it will live. The other clone I took last week seems very healthy and has had the humidity dome baggie off for most of the week. I think it is going to take root for certain.

The flowering is only really a week or so into it so really nothing new to report other than the plants really seem to take to HPS. Closet temps are cool and hopefully if the clones take I will be throwing those into the veg chamber. Right now they are sitting on a workbench under a small cfl until I can be sure they are rooted and ready for the veg chamber.

OK, I relented due to overwhelming requests from various users on rollitup, I have decided to post some photos of the flowering (only switched over for a week - but they had a little head start from being outside since June - they were starting anyway I think).

So all of you can stop PM'ing me constantly because it is overwhelming my inbox, you will simply have to start posting here.

Update:

The first round of clones looks like 100% success, but one of the clones is weak, for sure.

The second round clones are 50/50 bags off and one is limping, 2 more look like hell, the other 3 look like they will take...

Flowers are clearly showing now in the flower chamber and in the veg chamber the remaining AK clone is regenerating and hopefully soon I will clone it some more as well, I think I will wait a couple of few weeks.

The flowering is in full swing on all plants with the AK lagging about 2 weeks behind and unfortunately quite stretchy...it's kinda tight in there, but no worries I know they will grow bushy based off the mom.

The clones are really looking like hell. Only 2 are going to survive and they will take another week to be ready to show roots. The other cuttings showed roots in much quicker time and were in larger pots tho...I am going to wait awhile and try to take some more cuttings.

Pics to follow but I think all is cool.

OK, here is a pic of my AK mother, bagseed clone (has bamboo stick stuck in pot), plus 2 super healthy (had roots poking out of the coconut) clones and a thrid that was healthy but now seems to be stuck...thinking of culling it, but am willing to give it a week or two.

Mom is totally ready to be cloned again, but I am going to wait awhile because I just fed her a week ago after the second round of cloning.

For the record, the second round of cloning was a complete failure, 100% loss rate. I tried a humidity dome box as a last ditch effort, but after 2 weeks it was obvious that after just 2 days the dome was just rotting already dying twigs. Nary a root to be seen. Something went totally wrong but I would swear that I had a better success rate (as evidenced by the healthy ones in the photo) on the first batch. I bought some gel hormone $$ and will give it a few weeks before I reattempt in coco cubes instead of soil and powder (rooting hormone powder). For the record I was using the green light powder. It does seem to work under the right conditions.
