Outdoor Roof Grow in the Tropics

lol awesome! man i reckon that riverfront is the best place yet, love it at night along that paved walkway with the riverboats going up and down beside it, all those top eateries & hotels there as well, its been 5 years since i been there but hoping next year i can make it back to Kampuchea.
yeah i think you can find some genuine Cambo strains sometimes but the hybrids(Euro/US) types are creeping in to from what i saw, hows the flooding happening there for you? ive heard its bad in some parts of Cambodia recently
Hey sorry I took so long for the reply. Yea most of the country side is flooding so it's messing up the supply of herb right now. Alot of garbage bud floating around. But I'm growing in buckets under a roof so I'm pretty safe from flooding. Still plenty of good sun haha.
It's funny I've been here for 5 years now and man alot has changed these last couple years. You won't recognize it when you come again. It's growing but it's also alot of outside influence now. Alot of Vietnamese and Chinese taking over the whole country. We actually just had a bank robbery which is something that I've been told has never happened before. This country is changing fast and I don't know if it's for the best or not. But hopefully things will be good when you visit haha. I'll keep a couple buds for you!

Hey guys! I would like your opinions on how much longer you think this is going to take to finish flowering. I know it's just a couple pics but just try to estimate. I plan to leave it alone untill most of the leaves fall off. I feel like I harvest too early based on trichromes. So this time imma make sure not to get too excited and cut them early. 20180824_170758.jpg

These 2 plants I decided to let grow outside of my little grow tent. So they get alot more sunlight. I think they are about a month younger then my flowering plants now. But they are way taller haha. Just a little experiment. 20180824_171058.jpg

Just a extra pic.

Had a little question. Most of my plants are female. I know that's a good thing. But I literally haven't ran into any males. But I get hermies more often then I want haha. Is that because the seeds come from Hermie plants? I don't do much to stress them but I'll get them here and there all the time.

Ran across this photo of one if my previous grows. It was a random seed that sprouted so I let it go naturally. Just a little training. And I got 1 nug. 1 beautiful nug. It was fast too, like straight to flowering haha. These photos aren't edited. I took them with my old 5s.20180824_174609.jpg

but hey your plants are growing like crazy, great stuff, are you planning on staying in Cambodia or moving on elsewhere at a later date? ive been thinking of moving there this last 8yrs, but if the Chinese/Viet become too controlling there i may rethink on that

they appear to have a long way to go before ripeness, like4-8wks left maybe, thats the thing with the equatorial type sativa, they may take a very long time, if i see 90% browning of the pistils that can be a good indicator of ripeness to as long as the browning hasnt been brought about by damage from rain etc, that herming is a bummer, it means you can never relax because you always got to keep checking them almost every day, once a batch of seeds i have show herm tendency then i get rid of them, one reason yours may be herming is that they may be getting interrupted light patterns during the night? are there any lights in nearby buildings that are shining in on them? it only takes the smallest amount of external light to mess them up? if there is light at night near them you may have to make a dark area/enclosure so they get solid darkness for 12hrs, i do that with mine, every night i pull a blackout cover over a frames with plants inside to ensure total darkness for 12hrs every night

Welcome to RIU. We had a member who grew on his rooftop in SE Asia. Good thread. Might do you some good. He's not around anymore, but you can find out some of his tricks for growing in the tropics.

Good luck.

I heard he found work, but it was after he had rubbed lots of his friends the wrong way. He used to be on our IG thread, but I haven't heard from him in a year or more. Someone said he still posts on RM3's Riddler forum. I think that is a pay site, {$4.20 per month} so I don't know for sure.

Hey, I plan on staying here for a while because my wife and kids are here. I hope that things change for the better and not the worse but only time will tell.

Wow thank you very much for the info. My plants are next to a street light unfortunately. I didn't think it made much of a difference but now that you tell me that I'll have to figure out a way to block out all the light. I once did a space bucket grow and even without any light during flowering it still became a Hermie. But I will find a way to block out the lights.

hoping things go ok for you and your family there, just keep your head down with the politics, you cannot say anything there because many ears are listening, i witnessed the mutilation of protesters by 'special police' in Phnom Penh 5yrs ago, 1 street back from the riverfront, just behind the night markets, there was a group of approx 30 protesters(weaponless), & what looked like 100 of these 'specials', really big guys, didnt know Khmer got that big, launched into those protesters with heavy batons, and even though all consciousness of those protesters was lost those police just kept beating those people, they wanted to break every bone in the bodies of those protesters, im sure some perished, so when the leader says he will smash all opposition...he really does exactly that. i had never seen brutality like that before and was very shocked.
anyway back to the grow, i use an arch frame, you may be able to get flexible plastic tubing and make an arch greenhouse/frame too, and get a poly tarp cover. one that doesn't let light through, it has to be total dark for that 12/12 light/darkness, it requires you keep a strict timetable of putting it on and off at exactly the same time every day, if you mess it up more than once...hermies will result too

Yea I stay away from all of that. It's a part of me that wants to say something but I know you can't win here. It's a different set of rules that they play by. Their rules haha. After having my kids I actually get scared thinking about things like that. It's sad to see how these people give no value to a human beings life. Literally people shooting and killing in broad daylight and they just pay 2 grand to get away. Literally 2 grand. Meaning that a new motorcycle would cost more then your life. And that's just sad. But like you said. Keep my head down and away from that stuff.

I have a tarp cover that I'mma use but I have to build a small enclosure for them so I'll have my vegging and flowering tents. I'm just trying to keep it low key and people might get suspicious if I'm covering the plants up. Would moving the plants around stress them? I might have to put them in a dark spot and then move them back to the sun.

yes i understand what you mean, those protesters were/are(the ones still alive) the bravest of people, they KNEW what was going to happen to them, yet they still went ahead peacefully protesting for a change of government, Cambodia is a wonderful country...but DO NOT get into trouble with the police.
its ok to move them around i think as long as they dont get beaten up, neighbors there maybe a problem, i do not know of any other way around your light issue?

sad to see this old cinema being hit by the wrecking ball, used to go here with my girlfriend sometimes for some light entertainment, had to rest your feet on the back of the seats as rats the size of otters scurried around in the darkness under your feet looking for scraps hehehe

hey are you ok? did you get the light situation worked out?
Hey yea I'm alright. The plants are looking great. I apologize, I've been very busy with my new job. Just trying to stay focused now but my babies should be ready soon. And no signs of hermies!!
The shade cloth around my plants keeps it pretty dark. I had an issue with some bamboo dust and last night I saw some spider mites. I plan to do a bud wash on this plant after harvest but I also washed them last night. It gets pretty hot during the day so they should dry off on their own. I'll post up some more pictures this weekend. 20180925_194412.jpg
