Ozgirls Veggie Grow

Hi, I'm just starting out with growing veggies. So far I have a garden bed which has been dug out 3 feet down and filled in with our special mixture of soil sand and horse manure.
So far I have a row of corn up the back row, 4 gold zucchinis in right corner, and 2 parsley next to those. It is not mulched yet, but will be on the weekend.
I also have lots of seeds planted, and lots are coming up, so I will have broccoli, cauliflower, tomatoes, green zucchini, chili, beans, watermelon, pumpkin, capsicum, sunflowers, carrots.

Obviously they wont all fit in that garden bed, I have a half acre overgrown paddock out back that gets full sun, so the watermelon and pumpkin vines will be growing out there, and will be digging a few large holes out there and preparing the soil.

Also I will be getting large pots so I can grow some things in those as well, as you can see in the photo, I have 2 blue clam shells with flowers in them, my daughters wanted their own flower garden each, so I drilled several holes in the bottom of the clam shells and filled them up with our special mix, and let the girls pick out some flowers and plant them, I will let them be responsible for looking after them.

But I will be using 2 more clam shells for myself to make some herb gardens as well.

There is also a photo of a passion fruit bush stump, it has been pruned right back, and replanted here, again it has a 3 foot deep hole filled with our special mix, you cant see in the photo, but there is several new shoots appearing all over the place, so I'm hoping to see some beautiful fruit from it this year.

I will be feeding with charlie carp, for those who don't know it is a company started over here in Australia by a man who is turning a feral pest species (carp) into really good fertilizer, its all organic, and its helping a cause I care about.

And I have chickens so can make as much chicken poo tea as I like.

I have a new love of growing, and want to journal my progress so have started this thread for that purpose, and of course if anyone wants to follow along or give advice and comments please fell free to
:)

Glad to have you along for the ride sns :)

I forgot to mention before, I have my own compost pile, which can be seen in one of the photos, it was started just over 4 weeks ago, and has a mixture of leaves small twigs, heaps of veggie and fruit scraps, grass clippings, garden soil full of worms, horse poo, and I have been keeping it moist and turning regulary with the pitch fork, it is already starting to break down really well, and I cant wait to be able to use it on the garden. I am also going to start a a worm farm, and large compost bin.

I will be doing weekly udates with photos on wednsdays, so here is this weeks update.

SDC11111.jpgSDC11112.jpg
I have started potato and sweet potato in tyre stacks, the idea is as the plant grows up, you add more tyres and fill with the soil mix around the plant, and then come harvest time there is no digging into the ground, you just remove 1 tyre at a time removing potatoes as you go.
The little plant is the pontiac potato, and the larger one with my chook is sweet potato.

This is a pic of the products I have and will be using, charlie carp, seasol, and a seed and clone strter hormone.

SDC11086.jpg
This is my zuchini, as you can see they are flowering, and im pretty sure I should cut them off as they are just to small to support fruit, well I think so anyway, I will try and find some info tonight and decide then.

SDC11087.jpg
This is another one of my passionfruit vines I already had, and pruned right back, They were in a terrible spot before and never had any love, This vine will be trained throughout the rail for the stairs and upstairs verandah

SDC11088.jpgSDC11089.jpg
The first picture is my soil pile, it has heaps of good soil mixed with manure, heaps of worms, and just covered with mulch. I have made this for filling my pots and tubs, the second pic is my chicken poo tea brewing away mmmmm yummy, well for the plants anyway, it has to sit for 3 weeks before I can use it.

SDC11090.jpg
This is my little mango, its looking really sad since I transplanted it, im just hoping it will come good again.

SDC11085.jpg
This is my seedlings, looks like every single seed is sprouting, which im pleasantly surprised about.

Its great to have you along for the ride mcpurple, I will head over and check out your thread :)

Hey mcpurple, thanks. Im in queensland, australia. What a shame you cant have some chickens, I love my girls, they are the best pets and give me lots of fresh eggs.
And yes its all organic. I will leave the flowers as you suggested, and let it work itself out.
What part of america are you from? I was trying to click into your veggie thread, but I cant get into it, I found the lst thread, which is helpfull by the way as im looking into doing lst outdoors.

Hi to anyone stopping by, I thought I might do an update again.

Today I have planted 2 brocoli, 2 cauliflower, and 3 tomatoes into the garden, a few days ago I planted the buk choy aswell, so now that garden is full. I took a few photos even though they are tiny, also as you can see another tomoatoe has gone into a pot.
SDC11134.jpgSDC11136.jpgSDC11133.jpg
I have also put all flowers from the kiddie pools into one, and the other is going to be filled with parsley and basil, the basil is a bit sad, hopefully its just a little transplant schock.
SDC11142.jpgSDC11139.jpg

After some more reading I realised my chicken poo tea will go bad just sitting there, so I have to start that again with an air stone and pump.

I have started pulling baby plants from my rainforest garden, and potting them, I have 1 umbrella plant, a baby palm, and the last is unknown, and unhappy. I want to have a few house plants around.
SDC11144.jpg

All my other seedlins are doing very well, but its time to kick my own butt into finding something to grow them all in within the week, time to get motivated.
SDC11140.jpgSDC11141.jpg

Oh and I've saved the best for last, my inlaws just bought me a dwarf lemon, and navel orange tree with 2 nice pots to put them in, they arn't planted yet, I want to go and find some nice potting mix tomorrow for them.

Looking good. I just started my own indoor garden. I will be trying to grow some watermelon this year if I can get the things that I need. Feel free to check it out and leave a comment.

It helps to lock in the water in the soil during the summer but also helps reduce the sun from possibly producing some type of fungi or mold on the soil.

Hi frozstickzero, nice of you to pop in, and thanks for answering the question for mcpurple, I just use my own grass clippings, not hay(there is enough expense in gardening already) I have so much of the stuff that it gets spread between the compost and the gardens for mulch for free.

very nice. i especially like the "daughter's independent" gardens. my toddler is still a bit wee for that, but we're at the "helpful" stage (we shall see how long that lasts.... *knocking wood*) so i'm sure there'll be some pebble-picking and weeding this summer at least anyway... last year was learning to sniff the herbals like a bunny rabbit... so much fun!

Hey tricka, how cool to see you over here, are you interested in growing some veg? its lots of fun.

Hello mellokitty, thanks alot, my daughters are a little older than yours, but their not doing a great job looking after the flowers, I since replanted all the flowers into one of the shells, the other is now for some herbs, and this way they can take care of just the one together.
Oh and I love how toddlers love to help, however with mine once they could actually do it and were asked to, they stop enjoying it, lol, such is life I spose. How cute sniffing the herbals like a bunny, gotta love kids :)

lol funny, I'm actually about to start a thread myself for the herbs and flowers i'm growing in and out of my grow room to help combat smell.

It's not going to cover it completely or anything, just add something new to the overall smell, so when you smell it, your not just smelled weed.

Have you thought about jasmine, I was wandering about it, because of the beautifull powerfull sweet smell it puts out, it could really help with masking the smell of mj perhaps.
