Partial harvesting

As if!

Ive read that people will harvest the top section of a plant. Let the lower half get some light and then cut that.

Are there any downsides to this?

Only downside is if you're trying to turn over that space as quickly as possible to get new plants in there flowering. If that's not an issue dor you, then it does let the lower buds ripen more.

If your cutting the plant in half or even sections, will speed up drying time which isn’t a good thing. Learn if not already LST, produce a lot more grade A bud, that way there’s no need to part harvest .

True, but there’s ways around this such as grouping the individual branches together when hang drying to help slow down the process.
I agree, LST is a great way to have a uniform canopy

Agree with what Tracker posted. Used to stagger partial harvests over about a 7-10 day period in a SCROG setup to get the same cloudy/amber trichome proportions in a strain used primarily for nighttime/sleep.

Buds on branches added during stretch would be fully ripe a little behind the original tops.

Advantage was less trimming all at once. Downsides were space in the flower room and the added OCD rechecking of ripeness daily with a loupe. Did not find that it increased yield much if at all but it made the effect of the cured bud more consistent.

I would not have staggered harvests like that if the patient had not noticed that doing this made it better for going to sleep. I did not notice a huge difference myself but also did not like that strain very much, it left me quite unmotivated.

I dry in the pot and remove nodes when required. (10-15% bud moisture content} Took a few off this plant that were ready, then cut the rest over the next 6 days. This works for me.

Agreed, environment conditions could slow things down too also, but can’t beat a whole plant hang dry

i trained and topped one of them. Consensus Seems to be not much gained from the staggered approach

As an aside: Why do people recommend to dry the whole tree? I just cut a plant and broke it into nugs and put in a drying rack…..

To slow down the drying process for a better dry/cure. The quicker it dries, the more terps that are melted off:cry: Also you don’t want the dry room to be hot either, as the heat will also evaporate terps. You want to be right around 60F/60rH, but obviously you can’t always control everything so if you could only get your drive room to 65 maybe try increasing the relative humidity to 65 as well so you can slow down that drying process. Anything to slow down the drying process without causing bud rot is what you want to do

if you cut the plant and broke it into nugs I would try and group them together to slow down the drying process for better Terp/flavor preservation
