Peroxide?

Just curious if anyone else has heard and or uses peroxide in their water (supposedly just a few drops) to keep pests and help overall plant health. Anyone else hear that as well?

Yep, theres debate all over the place. I have a gallon of it that I use to clean my hydroton with. I did use it to help with a nasty gnat problem in soil. But now I'm hydro, and the chlorine in my water does what peroxide does, so it sits in the fridge mostly. Depending on how curious you are, theres posts here that go into the chemistry of it and the breakdown of it in terms I cant comprehend. Anyhow, I say that if youre hydro with tap water, dont buy it. If youre in soil and use RO water, or hydro with RO, buy some. Just be warned: the good stuff is expensive, burns the shit outta ya, and has a short shelf life. Happy growing to ya!

I am curious as to what you mean by "the good stuff" as far as peroxide goes...I could be just completely ignorant of it but isn't their only a basic kind of peroxide (found in walmart, CVS etc) or is their "industrial" strength" stuff. Just curious b/c I actually have a gnat problem (very small but would like to not have to buy azatrol) and use soil myself. Thanks.

the lower strength are available over counter at walmart or drug store, and will work, but the sheer ammount of it, and possible unknown buffers, make it uneconomical. The "good" stuff is food grade and it is a tad harder to find. In the long run, the 35%+ is cheaper, but only if you don't dont get it at a hydro store that screws you on price. I ordered mine from garden of eden. I mixed it so strong in the soil that it fizzled. I believe it saved a crop from the rot, and the gnats. Plays hell on organics tho. Also, the 35%+ aint a joke, it will burn the shit outta you. your skin turns white for hours too. Not sure any permanant damage, but still... I suggest using google, theres TONS of articles on the subject. Believe it or not, some are well written. Happy growing to ya!

BTW, a few drops in a few gallons wont do shit, imho. Just as well save your money and use chlorinated tap water from time to time instead. Just my 2cents

regular peroxide is 3 % , lots of people use it and it works, but i have read bad things about using it also, better to go with a 50% horticulture or food grade.
