Sorry OP, your very lucky everyone I have ever gotten has screwed up.
If you are going to be feeding salts, then yeah, pHing you water and feed should matter. As you shouldn't count on all store bought soils having enough lime in them to buffer the soil properly throughout an entire grow cycle! And as far as pH pens go, buy whatever you can afford, but if its a cheap one, calibrate it before each use!
