So far this whole grow I would change my res or I had notes and the pH would gradually go up now it has begun to go down and I'm having a hard time getting it over 5.5. this must mean I'm experiencing some root rot or something similar, correct?

They don't feel slimey but......
Add bleach to your reservoir, either ca hypochlorite or na hypochlorite. Make sure there's nothing else in it. Do a search here for pool shock or bleach in reservoir for mixing instructions.

Make sure your reservoir is cool enough and dropping pH can mean an infection but it doesn't have to be Pythium. So disinfect everything! You can use that same bleach in higher percentage than you would run to clean up your reservoir.

I have been using the pool shock at a rate of 1 g per gallon and then 1 oz of that for 5 gallons. When I top off I add about a dropper full per gallon. I've tried very hard to keep my temperature below 70 and it is while I'm home but then when I go off to work I come back and it's usually in the 70s. I was finally able to get my pH to 5.7 last night by adding pH up little by little and higher pH water I'll just have to see where it's at when I get home from work today
