I worked a project over top of an elevator shaft. I had to cross to the center of an I beami'll walk across a piece of rebar, if it's not more than 6 feet off the ground. i wouldn't willingly walk across a 2x12 beam if it was 20 feet or higher off the ground
to do some work. This was at the top of the shaft on the 5th floor.
At that time there were few OSHA regulations being enforced so I was there with no safety harness and only the bottom of the shaft to catch me if anything happened.
I went out, completed the work, no problem. Then I looked down.
I'm sure there was sphincter clench marks left on that beam. I froze in place.
Could not move forward or back. Fortunately a coworker noticed and was able to
capture my attention and help me to stay calm and slowly work through the situation I was in.
I worked that job a few more years then found a new line of work.
