I am a diehard Photoshop fan... but the damn thing really is a monster program.. and pretty pricey too

I have used and still use Serif Photoplus has some decent quick fix stuff some of the same commands as PS (which is great cuz I spent years learning em)

I have heard gimp is pretty decent have tried to use it.... but stopped not sure why tho.. perhaps it did not support my Wacom editing tablet

what do you use for edits?


I use breezebrowser for quick viewing of pics as well

I like a free editing program from FastStone.org. Not as many bells and whistles as photoshop but still comprehensive. Faststone also has several other photo utilities including a stand alone resizer.

Adobe Photoshop Elements has everything nearly anybody could want and that includes pro photogs. Buy the edition before the latest one and still get everything you could ever want. Way way cheaper than even older full editions of Photoshop.

Paint.NET was initially intended as a free replacement for the Microsoft Paint software (as stated by its developers).Paint.NET has recently evolved into a simple yet powerful image/photo editing program and supports mainly all the image formats.Its for Windows only and is available as a freeware.It supports layers, history, and has an action manger.

I use photoshop cs4. Gimp would be another alternative but I like photoshop...cs2 is free now, not sure how different they are. I torrented a bunch of plugins for it a few years ago.

Also if you do HDR photos you should get photomatix specifically for that, you generate the hdr there then bring into photoshop and clean it up...

So I've never actually edited a photo before. What are some characteristics of a photo that one edits? Besides like removing red eye. I use the GIMP to wipe the EXIF data before I upload here, I imagine it also has a plethora of features to edit images as well.

ummm.......................................

White balance, levels, exposure, contrast, saturation/vibrance, hue, sharpness, noise, masks, and potentially many others depending on the photo and what you want to bring out in it. The more that's done on the camera the better, editing in software can leave ugly noise. Noise is the graininess usually in dark areas of a photo. Shooting an under exposed image will look like shit if you simply increase the exposure in software.

Sometimes you want to use layer masks to blend features into an image while not affecting the entire photo. So you duplicate the layer, maybe you increase the saturation to make a color pop, then you can just blend in the part with color(like flower petals) while leaving the stem and rest of the photo as it was. For portraits people usually do work on the eyes to make them pop, maybe you do unsharp mask on just the eyes or eye lashes. Usually you ad warmth to the skin (like a light HPS color light)

edit:: Also if you have a camera that shoots RAW format and jpeg, the raw format is "raw", meaning if you shoot the same thing in raw and jpeg, the jpeg will be sharper and have some processing done automatically. The raw image will not be as sharp, and may not look as well until you modify it in software. But the raw image is better because you have more control on how it's finished.

I use creator nxt and adobe cs2 for my photo edits. Its not the best to use but it is easy to use and i already paid for one of it. Oh, adobe cs2 is free. so grab it if you want.
