Photoshop can be very overwhelming when starting out. I recommend picking up one of the many books available, particularly the photoshop Bible. If you're feeling kinda cheap, then just walk into a Borders or Barnes And Noble and read a couple of the books there or check out some of the magazines. You can usually find a couple of good tutorials and you don't have to pay for them.

Don't expect to have it mastered in any short amount of time. I've got about 8 years under my belt and I'm still learning and learning.
