Picking a strain...A simple question.

So i'm really torn on what strain(s) to get, let alone who or where to get it from. I realized I should just grab something that basically suits my needs, is well known and legit, and experiment from there.

My instincts are to get an older tried and true cultivar like skunk, NL, WW, etc. BUT

My question is do the newer hybrids really produce that much better quality smoke then their ancestors, and are they more temperamental?

If they are just as easy to grow and produce much better nugget than i'd go for them, otherwise I would rather grab a few reg NL seeds and grow that for a year or two.

I really just don't know, and get such random and sparse info, then I feel like half of it is just marketed.

I'm sort of new to growing but am very good with plants, so someone please just help me!!!

Well, if money is of no concern, I say go for the gusto and splurge on something special.
Somebody's advertizing 28% THC, but the per seed price is stupd.

Check out Attitude http://www.cannabis-seeds-bank.co.uk/ What type of high are you looking for? Indica or Sativa, maybe a mix of both? Also will you be growing indoors or outdoors. You wouldn't want to grow a Sativa dom strain indoors with limited space, not that you can't but I would recommend that you start off with an indica strain.

if you want something really nice, you can look to breeders like Bodhi and Gage Green and TGA to name a few, they are all available at the link wally posted . Bodhi and Gage Green sell out real fast, so you kinda gotta be on your toes if you want it. TGA gear was all in stock the other day. Plush Berry seems to be a favorite from TGA, i have some started now, but i havent finished any yet.

if you want real legit old school stuff like you mentioned (Haze, Skunk, NL5, etc) check out Mr Nice, also available at the link wally posted.

i would stay away from Green House and Barneys

well i'd like to have a SOG style, and only have 5 ft w/out the light so im thinking i may do 12/12 from clone. But besides that, i've heard everything from indica to sativa for 12/12, idk why. I always would have thought indica but i guess its bushier less lollipop like.

I want something that will be a good yielder, but have a good-very good quality to live up to today's standards.

Thanks for the info on attitude btw. I'll either go with them or sea of seeds probably, whoever has what im looking for.

Thanks

Now if grown under optimum conditions, to near their top potential is their a huge difference in quality/potency between the TGA, gage green etc and the Skunk#1, NL, etc from mr nice?

Sour Diesel and Bubblegum are two classic strains, and you can get the hybrid called "Sour Candy" for only $10 per feminized seed.

I'm on week 7, and the plant has really impressed me thus far. She's very strong, and just keeps packing on the weight. Her buds are lime green.

Give it a try.

NL and Skunk are just too plain for me... I'd rather grow some Mexican schwag and hope for something decent.*

Thanks, i'll probably go with regular seeds, just incase i needed/wanted to make more. but i would try the two on their own,

When you say you have 5 feet not including the light you mean 5 ft high? so throw the light in and you have less than 4 feet? I would say make sure to look for something that doesn't stretch much after the flip.

The other guys recommended some good breaders. I happen to be growing a few Gage Green strains, they have great stuff and they are real good people too. Most of their stuff is sold out but here very soon the Bright Moments will be stocked. So keep an eye out, it'll sell out in less than a day... Grape Stomper is their flagship strain I guess you'd say, and Bright Moments has plenty of GS in it.

I would recommend going to different breeders sites and checking out some grow logs, this way you'll see the strains growth structure and how they stretch after the flip etc. They usually include smoke reports etc. Also check out the logs on this site.

^ the black widow mentioned is great but I think it is listed as a 10 week finisher.. longer than I'm willing to wait, but that might not be a factor for you.

The old strains are not uniform and you can get varying quality from different batches or seed companies. Same is true of newer strains. But imo the old strains if done right are as good as the new. I do not have a preference between them, whatever suits my tastes is what is good, new or old.

a good hybrid with old scool genetic could be a querkle..i grown once afgans from nirvana and they were huge and super vigorous. i'll go with indicas as first experience even if scrogged

Thanks guys, yeah, my grow area is only 5ft high(maybe 5.5) , so it leaves me under 4 to grow. that's why i'm doing 12/12 from seed/clone. After doing a lot of research i think that i want a slightly more sativa due to the limited branching, maybe 70-30 or 60-40. I'll go with one of the better breeders that were mentioned, and probably get a older strain like a NL or black widow, and something a little newer (not sure yet).

What would the legit NL to get, be?

I've heard great things about Mr. Nice, and found some good deals on their auction site.

To the OP:
I started by ordering mixed packs, then from there decided what I wanted to keep growing via either re-order or clone. Old school strains are not necessarily easier, skunk/northern lights are but blueberry dominants have been giving me a bit of a challenge lately.

Hm, I was always kind of sketched out by the mixed packs...i'll look into it though. The thing is I'd rather try one strain at a time and go with it, if I dont like I can always try a new one. I may do two strains at a time...

What is the auction site your talking about? What kind of trouble do you have with the bluesberries? J/w

any skunks are easy strains, generally alot more forgiving,as are northernlights, skunk however has alot more variations, I would get a pack of sensi seeds skunk#1 or even a couple and hunt a special pheno from that,my mate found one pretty much the same as cheese, but has more of a rotting fruit/bin juice funk as well as that strange cheesey skunkiness.

If you are gonna grow sea of green you need a bunch of seeds to go through untill you find mothers. Keep in mind you can get many phenos in a ten pack so plant size will be all over the place. If you need to keep the cost down you might look at both these breeders. They have been at it for a longtime and strains are well tested

I can vouch for Sannie and I hear good things about Peakseeds.
TGA would be great if you dont mind the price.
Bodhi and gage green are top notch herb also
