Aaaarrrggghhh!!!!:cuss:

My local collective started a canned food drive back in Sept. to donate to a local charity and be distributed for the holidays. Awesome idea! Helping people out that really need it! Wrong.

When it came time to donate the food, they accepted it because it happened on live local news but then sent a letter stating that they would no longer accept any donations from us because of our MMJ status. They said they believe it is their mission to stop the use of ALL drugs in the homeless community and consider our participation with the donations is a conflict of interest. Must not have too many hungry people, I guess.

We followed up the canned food drive with a warming drive(blankets, coats, etc) that had already been started before we got this news. When the dispensary contacted them about accepting these donations on a low-down basis so nobody would see and we could still help others, they refused saying "We do not encourage the distribution of food or warming items to the homeless because this practice will make them more comfortable and then they would not have to come to the shelter and listen to scripture to get what they need." Say WHAT????

They would tell a hungry, cold homeless person that they are willing to help them contingent on listening to scripture? I understand their desire to spread their beliefs and have nothing against that, but their statement tells me that they are in it for ALL the wrong reasons. I believe we are going to move to start our own distribution network so we can bypass all this BS. I was just TOTALLY pissed to hear someone make the statements they did. I will personally contact local media, let them know what we're doing and why, and see if we can't muster a little community support. How can someone claim to be righteous and then turn around and pull crap like that?

Modesto? Los Banos? Gilroy?

Wait... this is medical... San Jose or Santa Cruz? I cannot think of many other central california med dispensaries.

Does SLO or Santa Barbara count?

There is no other outlet to help the homeless in your area? I guess you could start an outreach program that bypasses the church based endeavors. I am in a larger city and there are many different outlets.

Unfortunately, it seems as though even the "non-denominational" charities that are not missionary projects, they are funded by church based organizations that are willing to pull funding.

Does your local PD or FD run a food/clothing drive? That would be a hoot. You could donate the goods directly maybe?

Whenever you get a bureaucracy involved, whether it church or government involved, it seems like things get overly complicated. Sad that it takes so much work to simply help someone out.
