Hello from the UK , PLAGRON Batmix , i bought a bag from my local grow store, had to throw half the bag away, as it was full of wood bits and fluffy cotton wool type material . Wont be using that ever again.
I think that "Cotton wool type" you're referring to is a type of moss, I break those moss clumps with hands, I will also break those wooden bits if possible, else I'll leave them as they are (I believe those are in there to support beneficial microbes), I do not break bat guano though (hard 2cm-ish clumps).
I also add 10-20L of perlite (that I've washed thoroughly) and some mycos and mix it all thoroughly. I then saturate the medium and let it "cook" for a week or two (if two, then I will water again after 1 week has passed) as my understanding is that mycrobes require humid soil/medium to "live".
Also a note with perlite.
When I was adding perlite (from plagron) as well, without washing it, I had lockout issues and what not, sometimes cement on bottom of the fabric pot... So wash that shit, even though they claim it's washed and some special quality (it's horrible quality, but I can't get anything else here).
Also, from plagron I prefer Royal mix and All mix much more (batmix caused me some odd lockouts before so I am biased), I use same strategy for all of the plagron soils tho =)
