you can tell if your liquid culures are growing because it will be filled with a downey sort of clear gell. What you cannot do is tell if they are contaminated as unless the mycelium is floating on top of the surface, it will not sporulate and it takes a hell of a lot of experience to determine one "white" from another and most mycelium is "white" in the first place.
If you intend to innoculate a large number of jars, do yourself a favor and do a few tests from your liquid and wait for a few days - at least until you get the feel for it as if you do a large number with a contaminated liquid you will wind up throwing everything out.
