I've grown hundreds of plants in miracle grow and I have never had a problem. I've also grown in many other kinds of soils that were far more expensive and their was not much a difference in the soils. Always use a broad spectrum fertilizer and you will be ok. Just don't burn em up and water once the soil is dry. It sounds like your over watering.
With miracle grow those fertilizer pellets are activated every time you water.
Right now I make my own soil using miracle grow, lime, chicken shit, perlite and many other products. Never had a problem.
The only time I've had problems is when my ferts was too hot while watering, too much water or an insect like a stink bug for example chewing on the plant.
