Plant Pots

Is it necessary to use trays in conjunction with the plant pot for watering purposes? If so do you just cut a hole in the bottom of the plant container?

First of all I am a newbie myself, so don't trust me much ;)

I use trays just so I don't mess the place. I found these drainage coals in store, I laid them about 1 inch thick in the bottom and laid the soil on top. So when I water, excessive water drips in the tray but has no contact with the soil. I read drainage holes were essential and sitting the plant in water in the tray is not a good idea.

Good luck

first of all your pot should come with drainage holes when u buy it , as haluk said grab some stones and put them on the bottome of the pot then put the soil ontop , u can keep a tray underneath if u want because the excess water would probly only make it to the stones up thru the pot "maybe"

Walmart, Dollar Tree, lots of places sell clear plastic trays to go under the planter, in different sizes - and cheap, at that.

get a plastic mop bucket $2 for a 2 gal square one at walmart.put a 7/16 hole 2 inches from the bottom.fill it with perlite $7 walmart.you can run a tube from the drain hole to a reservoir and/or set it up on a feed timer if you want.i just hand water about 2-4 cups every 3 days so i get no run off,i just try to keep the bottom wet. from my experience this is the easiest cheapest way to get a good grow for a beginner.pm me if you need details..its called a hempy bucket

Do I still need a tray when I am sarting the plants as seedlings in my Jiffy 7 peat pots? Also is it possible to just use a pot and tray instead of having tubing carry the water away. I am in an apartment with limited space so I would like to keep everything confined to my grow tent.

you could just have the buckets siting in something and hand water but after you water a few times you'll figure out how much to give them and you can do it without having any run off.. so yes
