Plant size durring veg/flower

So I'm a first time grower, I'm growing indoor inside a shed. I'm growing 4 plants under a 1000 watt HPS light. The rooms humidity, temp and air flow has been perfect, I check it almost daily. I vegged the plants for about 5-6 weeks before I put them into flower. The only problem I have ran into that was last on my mind was how freaking big my plants were gonna actually get once I flipped them into flower. I know people say the plants double or even triple in size so what can I do to prevent that. I'll post some before and now pics but my plants were about 2 ft and I put them into flower sep 1st and now it's Oct 17 and my plants are 5.5 ft almost 6ft. Everything got out of control so fast!

The genetics are a very important part of the plant, and determines a lot.

The most obvious thing in the pics , looks like you popped seeds and just let them do what they wanted to.
I use a mix of Low Stress Training & Super Cropping. I top them at about 6-8" then start bending branches. I keep tying it down and letting new heads come up till it's a bush. Then I use a net to train once it's flipped to 12/12. This makes a nice full canopy.

Less N at the start of flip
Less of a jump in pot size if your transplanting before flip.
Wider pot vs a taller pot will bring you down a couple inches too. I've been playing around with pot size a lot, and got 6 more inches in veg with out losing root zone.

I got the plants from a friend when they were 3 weeks old, I topped them at week 4 and yeah I basically just let them grow and do their own thing. And yeah, I transplanted into a 10 gal pot then put them into flower 2 days later!
•what size of pot do you prefer?
•what are good nutrients? I use fox farms right now.
•durring veg with 1000 wattt HPS, how close should plants be to light?

You want to super crop them, bend the main stems in one or two places to take out some of the height, it will also stop them growing higher while they repair and result in a more even canopy and a large knuckle where you bent them which will strengthen those stems.
Look it up, read about how its done so you don't cause permanent damage. Its simple but scary for a newb.

Yes, my next grow I will do it, this grow just got alittle out of control but I think I'm gonna have a lot of buds haha

I start seeds in peat pellets, clones in 1" rockwool cubes, under T5s (50ish watts)
Then into 750ml containers, under T5s
(200w) then into #1 pots under CFLs (750w this will be switched to two CMH 315s) then I was going to 3 gallon squares, under CMH 315w. The day of the flip they go into 10g smart pots. Then to flower under a DE 1000w
I stopped using the 3G pots n cut 5g buckets @ 7" to replace.
This cut the pot hight in half, the wider pot has seemed to stretch less when flipped, and I get less trenching in the medium .

I'm not the guy to answer the nutrients questions. I'm using Advanced but I think theres just as good for a lot less $$$
Right now I'm strain n pheno hunting and testing , and this is taking priority over fertilizer testing . Once I get the strains I'm after , I'll be doing side by side testing with tight controls on nutrients.

I have never vegged with a 1000w HPS.
I would hold my arm at the canopy hight with my palm up. If this light is hot on my arm, it's to close for your plant.

Well you can still do it on this grow if they carry on stretching. Better that than have burnt top coals from growing into the light.
Your stretch may well be over, lets hope.

Thanks for the info, I only have 1 light and it's the 1000 watt so I use it for everything and it's done good so far, I usually give the young plants a 4 foot distance

To answer your nutrients question, all nutrients are good. Not much difference. Less is often more.
Bighorn covered your distance from canopy question.

Yeah, I think my plants are done growing taller now, I have the tallest plants tied off with some fishing line so it's pulled away from the light as much as possible.

I would not use fishing line, it's to thin
It will cut into your plant as they grow,
If the plant is moving around a little from the fans (they should be) it will act like a saw.

Use string or something with a larger OD
I use rubber coated wire ,

Ever see 1000# longliners mono? That wouldn't cut anything. Even 400 pound mono is too thick to damage a plant.

There's fishing. And then there's fishing.........

When someone says fishing line , I picture 10 pound test mono.
I don't get to Ocean fish anymore, mostly just trout on the eastern slopes with my 6wt sage.

The fishing line seems to be doing fine, I can move it around where it's on the plant and it hasn't carved or dug into the plant at all. Mainly using the fishing line cause my plants are super tall and getting wobbly

You are getting a little too close to the bulb in the last picture.

Best bet is to bend the main stem over until it is 90 degrees from the main stem. I usually bend the top 6-8 inches. Don't worry about injuring the plant. In fact, you may see yield increase as the bent part of the stem has more room for buds to form.
