back home........my dad puts the burnt ashes from our fireplace in the garden and in the spring he plows it in really good and he always has an impressive vegetable garden. don't really know what the ashes are supposed to do for the soil but he swears by it.

Ashes from a fireplace where hardwoods were burned has a high potash content. It's NPK is like 0,0,6,.. best for flowering. It's also high in pH (not acidic) and may have some small amounts of certain trace elements.

If that's what your soil needs, go for it.

It depends what the ashes are from... some are acidic, some are alkaline(usually they are 'polar'). Pot creates acidic ash, I'm pretty sure(it's a fairly acidic loving plant). I'd suggest mixing it with water and measuring/adjusting the pH as necessary.
