Plants growing very fast...need advice on how long to hold out before flowering

Hi Everyone,

You've all been wonderfully helpful in the past, and I have a BEAUTIFUL hydro grow going on because of it. Maybe it's too good? My plants are growing ridiculously fast now. At least an inch a day. I'm posting pix below and providing details, but my question is this: I assumed I was going to go to 8 weeks of vegetative growth (not counting the first two weeks of seedling life). But these plants are growing so fast, they're going to outgrow their space. So should 8 weeks still be the plan?

So here are the pix and the deets:

These TGA Subcool Jillybean plants are about 5.5 weeks from germination, 3.5 from veg. I topped about 8 or 9 days ago (Uncle Ben's topping above the 2nd node) when they were 5-6 nodes high. Growth has exploded since then. Plant on the right is about 15 inches high and the plant on the left is 17 inches high. All have tons of lateral branching and node growth. The lighting in these photos is odd and makes some of the upper leaves look like they have problems. They don't. They're all a lush green.

Initially I had some under-nuting deficiencies, but that's all been corrected now and all new leaf growth is SUPER healthy. Some of the lower fan leaves still have a little damage, but everything since then is beautiful. The roots, too, are a bright white. No problem maintaining 5.8 ph (range is 5.6 - 6.0). I do a full res change every two weeks. The "girls" are getting Advance Nutrients Micro, Grow and Bloom at full strength now (started at 1/4 and worked up to counteract the deficiencies) and also Cal Mag. They're drinking 3/4 to 1 gallon a day. And they're on a 24 hour light schedule under a 400W MH bulb.

Here's a pic of them in their tent:

So if I can expect them to double in size during flowering, I'm wondering if I'll be able to take them to the full 8 weeks. They're just over three weeks now. I read that vertical growth will slow, but when?

If 3.5 weeks = 17 inches, 8 weeks will put them at close to 40 inches. Add about 12 inches for the bucket, and they're going to be 52 inches (over 4 feet) before they start flowering. My tent is a little less than 5 and a half feet. Geesh!

Will vertical growth slow enough for them to go the full 8 weeks of veg without ultimately getting so big it causes a problem? I would like to do that if I can -- this strain is said to be a heavy producer, and I'd like to get the most of out them, assuming they're female.

Cheers!

If they are not ready to flower than you can keep topping them, or fiming they to keep them shorter. If they get to bushy you will want to get rid of some of the lower sites. How long you grow them is up to your grow methods and plans as well as the girls. If they show the signs of preflower and sex and your ready to flip, than flip them. Take clones so next time you can grow them as long and as tall as you want.

Thanks KingstonR,

I would be happy to let nature take its course, and wait until they're showing signs of preflower and then go to 12/12. But this is my first grow, and I'm not 100% sure what preflower signs are. It seems on this site that some people go to 12/12 in order to see whether they're male or female, right? But if I just wait, will I see those signs even under 24 hours of light?

Thanks!

Ive never been a fan of going by weeks i go by height. If your not gonna top em id flower at 2ft.
With just a 400 gonna be hard to get usable light to the bottom of the plant. You will have to do
some trimming i do it at 2 weeks flower,to get air movement and light to lower budsites.
Theres several methods i suggest you read on toppin, lst and Fim.This will allow you to get
the best results from this Grow.Id also suggest 18/6 for veggin

Ok, thanks! I've topped once already. I will look into lst and fim. Since this is my first grow I thought I'd be able to leave more advanced techniques to a later effort, but I guess I have to figure out how to handle what might be a space challenge.

I agree w Mr Ganja above. Go to flower now. Some people actually go straight to flower out of the "clonenator", but they are looking for a lot of small plants. You have the opposite. Anyway, as they all said, when to go to flower is up to you . . the longer you wait, the bigger your plant . . . but you're ready now.
PS They look great.

Dont flower anything under the 30cm, i did it once and it got 60cm at the end in a 2meter high room :D (Also lousy harvest.)

Better do it fast cause tht 400 is not gonna be enough light.

Hi Beech,

If you come back to this thread, please answer this question...and don't laugh or be rough on me if you think I just fell prey to marketing...I might have!

So I bought a small grow tent. 2 feet by 3 feet by about 5.5 feet. In the description, it was "sized" for six plants, meaning 6 3.5 gallon bubble pots could be shoved in there. Personally, I don't see how that would work...I have just two plants in there, and I couldn't get a third in and expect to have room for air circulation, let alone four more.

However, supposedly the 400WT lights (MH now, HPS for flowering) should have been good for two plants in a grow tent with a reflective interior surface.

But you're still thinking I'm under lit...and maybe I am. I don't know. It's my first time. What makes you say 400WT isn't enough? And for a grow tent my size, what wattage would you recommend?

Thanks!
