ok, ive looked all over this thread about watering and cant find what im looking for. What i want to know is how deep do i need the water to go everytime i water my plant? all i can find is wait till the soil is dry and water again but not anything about how much water i should put in. should i water it until it starts coming out of the drain holes or just kind of the top of the soil?

water should run out at every watering. this is why it is so important to have a soil mix that drains very well. I use sunshine #4 with 30% perlite added to it. I find this will even drain well after three months. I like to flush every three weeks, ie 2 x pot size clear water run through. Clearex is good too. I gal pot pour 2 gallons water on it. This will help keep your plants healthy right through flowering with out nute salt buildup and the nute lockout that goes with it.

I just stick my finger as far down in the pot as I can in like 4 places, if the soil on your finger is moist and still a little dark and muddy...thats about perfect. I am growing with straight up top soil right now and Im 9 weeks into flower..havent changed soil since the plant was in a cup... its working fine...It's better to water your babies not enough than too much...
well neither is better than the other, i guess....but your plants will tell you they dont have enough water and you can fix it immediately...water too much could mean root rot and it takes days even weeks to get back to normal and dont let the plants sit in the water that ends up in the bottom either...

and if your worried about water getting into all the nooks and crannies, just get a coat hanger and straighten it out and give the soil a couple of stabs or so. the top drying is not a good measurement...I'd say wait till the top dries and then wait 2 daysand soak it real good...that oughta keep you in the clear.

I agree with the guys - let the water run out the bottom. I use the drain holes at the bottom to check my soil - if its dry at the bottom its ready for more h2o. That is I used to check it that way...now I'm on a pretty good schedule. You can always buy a ph/moisture meter combo at home depot or lowes for like $10 but its not really necessary.

cool thanks so much guys, i was kind of surprised to see that no one posted how stupid i am for not finding it myself. one more question, should i just pour water in until it hits the bottom or should i spray it with a spray bottle till it hits the bottom? spray bottle is kinda a pain in the ass

Hey poncesurfer420 -- Look like you already transplated or I'd suggest drilling a few additional holes. Also a single layer of stones at the bottom will help your plant to drain. Don't worry though! That pot is fine. If you feel like the soil is taking forever to dry you can always aerate it by stabbing the soil with a pencil a few inches deep. Remember - its easier to regain from dry than it is from too much water -- so take it slow at first. Watering a couple times a week should do ya!

I think you are over complecating it. When you water, water to the fulliest. Then don't water again until the leaves start to droop or when the pot is light.Every 3 days or so.
