Until they pop up they really don't need light yet - just some warmth n moisture...when they first pop out of the surface you really don't need a lot of light for several days, but should provide more as they start to get larger...everyone told me to just rock CFL's for the first several days after they sprouted, but all I had was a MH so I dimmed my ballast down to 50% n kept it several feet away (600w on 50% so ~300w)...was a little too much at first n they were showing signs of heat stress n PMS, but they grew out of it after a week or so n took off...next time around I'll definitely be starting with less light.

I start running lights as soon as I think they might pop just to reduce stretch when they do pop.

i generally start my lights as soon as i plant mine, but only because im busy most of the time and dont have the time in a day to walk into my grow tent occasionally to see if they popped. generally you're only looking at 3 days of light with no plants if they are germed. Sometimes less than that. good luck :) hope this helps.

cheap route.....T12 or T8 shop light at lowes. Run 24\7 and keep the top of the plant about and inch or 2 from the bulbs. Ive done it that way for over 10 years without any issues with heat etc
