(pointless update)So I was wondering why my one pop'd bean wasn't breaking the surface...

My seed stock is ancient (five years+) but I had set 5 beans pop hoping to get 2 plants, only one of the beans pop'd and I stuck it in a soil pod to sprout. It's been awhile, far longer than I had expected to wait before it should have broke surface so I knew something was wrong.

I let it go for a few more days thinking it might have been slow since it was such an old seed and today was the final day. I moved some soil aside to see how far it had grown and found that it hadn't grown at all. It must have used the last of it's energy breaking out of the shell and then it stalled. (Strain: Bubblegum x Freezeland)

Now I put 5 more beans to pop, I don't have much faith in these growing but I'm going to give it my best shot. I'm kind of hoping for a male and female so I can resupply my seed stock.

I know I didn't store my seeds properly, heck I didn't even expect to grow then out. (I do love eating them though).

Has anyone ever roughed the shell of the seed to allow for better water penetration? (matchbox+sandpaper+shake)

I've never tried it but I've read some things that indicate it might be a benefit. Thoughts?

Might not be a good idea to start damaging the seeds shell, afterall it is there to protect what's inside, plus the paper towel method is more reliable, how are you germinating at the minute??

Try using a shot glass of water to pop your beans, maybe sandpaper may help after all this time, if you have many to hand there certainly be no harm in trying
