you can go up to 5ppm free chlorine and still be safe for humans and plants.

you could also run some submersible UV bulbs too.

Alright I'll keep my ppm of chlorine no higher than 4 just incase.

After this algae clears up my only other concern is the dead roots that might fall into the reservoir.

Vertical pipes holding the plants are directly above the reservoirs so it makes it difficult to get into the tanks to hand pick stuff out.

Yeah I could line all my tanks with light block sheeting but that would make accessing the filters even harder. If I up my ppm of chlorine to 4ppm and keep it running at 4 ppm hopefully I'll never have the algae issues.

Will chlorine break down dead roots over time aswell?

You'd put the uv light in the return pipe I suppose so every rotation would go through UV

But I guess chlorine should do the job of getting algae under control, debris from plants is my next concern

That's exactly what they do, same with whole house and airstream apps. They divert the air/water through sleeves. If you look at a ducted air one they use blades to divert air close to the bulb. The theory with ducted ones is they eventually do some thing, I tend to discount the air ones as useless for the most part :(
Edit: I like my whole house UV though, it works great, my water won't kill me lol.
