Portable a/c units

Anyone using one just now.... are they any good?

Ive seen one that is 9000btu and its only for a small grow with one 600w tent and a veg tent with flouros to sit in the bedroom to keep the temperature down

Think it will do the job?

depends on the type and how well you install it. two types - one hose and two hose. the single hose systems use room air to cool the compressor and then sends that air out the exhaust - meaning you haven't treated that air for smell. a one hose system is also less efficient than a two hose model. in a two hose system air is drawn in from one hose, cools the compressor and is sent out the other hose. meanwhile room air is drawn into the unit through grills and is cooled and sent back out another set of grills, so no air from the tent is ever exhausted outside. if you use a two hose system and carefully and completely insulate the exhaust hose it will do a good job of cooling. a 9000 btu unit installed properly is plenty for a 600 watt light.

it was a one hose i was looking at... pretty cheap and i was just going to stand it in my room near the tent and expel the air and water out the window

im also hoping it might help the temperatures in the tent as the ambient room temperature will be a lot better

1 watt is 3.41 btu per hour. You'll often see "btu" as a shorthand for btus per hour. For example on a propane heater I just bought the package says "3000 btus." what that really means is 3000 btu/hr or about 880 watts.

So - 600 watts * 3.41 btu per hour = 2046 btu/hr

so is it ok for the portable a/c unit to just sit in the room outside the tent - will that do the job?

also i vent into the same room with my veg cupboard and out into the hallway with my hps at the moment

will it be ok to vent into the same room i.e will the air conditioning cool everything?

You will need to vent to the outside, if you don't your room temperature will rise and you A/C will become ineffective.

You will also need to ventilate the tent.

yeah - what i mean is as long as i vent the air conditioner to the outside will everything be fine?

You will still want an exhaust fan for you tent. Otherwise the heat will build up in the tent.

I have no exhaust fan in my tent, that's what the A/c is for, to cool it down. I do inject Co2 so I don't need to exchange the air. The A/c comes on to lower the humidity also...JR

I don't know, you will have to do a test run and see how hot the tent gets without ventilation.

ordered it today - looking forward to seeing the results, i have exhaust fans for each of my areas - hopefully this will sort all my problems
