I'm not sure if this has been done before but I've been thinking about it a lot lately as spring slowly creeps up on us.
I was thinking: instead of buying expensive 30 gallon pots I would dig a thirty gallon hole in the garden and then fill it with a proper growing medium like Fox Farm Ocean Forest.. That way you have a healthy medium for your roots to start in and they also have the ability to expand in to the garden soil if it comes to that point.. Hence there is no limit to root growth (provided your soil is of decent quality).
Has anyone ever tried something like this or think it would turn out well?
