Pot size Fact or Fiction?

My buddy was discussing with a group of people about different setups and the topic of potting came up. Hes always gone from 2.5 gallon, to 5 gallon pots.

A Guy who was very in depth with his part of the conversation claimed that if he used ONE 20 gallon bin(rubbermaid) for ONE plant. That ONE plant would produce more bud than 4 plants in 4 5 gallon pots under identical, and optimum conditions in the same 3 month life cycle.

Can anyone shed some light on this for me please? Is this true or is this BS? I know more roots = more leaves and more shoots, but is it really an equivalent or better?

Like jats said, it's true. Look for a journal by M Blaze. All he does is grow trees, that produce 2+ pounds each.

That's true. It comes down to how you would like to grow. More small plants that don't produce as much, or just a few large plants that produce more. In my opinion, how you would get more in the end depends on conditions.

Think of it this way - Your plant will more times than not grow to about the size of it's root mass. Maybe a little bit more. Bigger root mass = bigger plant mass! :bigjoint:

It is true, the bigger the pot the bigger the plant. From my understanding roots grow OUT, once they can not grow out anymore they grow DOWN, and once they grow down the plant will start to stretch upwards instead of bushing out. The thing about using bigger pots is that in order to produce ONE plant the size of 3-4 plants you must veg longer. So in that sense it comes down to preference. Do you want to harvest indoors in 3 months or 5-6?

I thought planting a seed, or a clone strait into a say, 5 gallon pot, is a bad thing because the soil becomes stagnate before roots grow into it..idk just read it somewhere before. May be bullshit.

It will depend on how ya grow.If ya stick a clone in a 50 gallon pot and one in a 3 gallon pot and slam them both in bloom ya prolly wont see any diffrents.I grow indoors and only run a plant say 3 months.2wks in clone 2 wks in veg and 60 days in bloom in a 3 gallon pot and pull 6 zips per plant..Now my green house girls are in 15 gallon pots and veg all summer and throw about 2lbs per girl.Yeah pot size matters but it's how ya grow that makes the diffrents not the pot size.
