With coco you need to fertigate daily(at least)...that's food and water. Since coco is inert you have to supply everything. It's almost impossible to overwater...that's the big difference in how they're treated.
Coco will out preform soil with all other things equal....in growth rate and yield.

Coco basics.
Start in solo cups.
Feed daily to substantial run off.
Never plain water.
Never, ever let the coco dry.
Daily feeding replenishes the nutes, pulls in fresh oxygen to the roots, and prevents salt build up.
