I used to grow in Miracle Grow Moisture Control. The construction of the soil was terrible, basically cheap compost with mulch and some very cheap based fertilizer caps. I also used Miracle grow general purpose fertilizer (the blue powder) throughout Veg n Flower. Again the fertilizer is about as cheap as it comes, and builds up as some nasty salts in the soil pretty fast. That said it works very well if you use common sense. (Mainly remember to do a very over compensating flush between veg n flower especially if its a longer running plant so you can get through the cycle without any buildup)
Since then I've mainly been using FFOF (eastcoast) and Roots Organic. I usually mix the two with a couple other things, but out of them I think Roots is a better soil. That said FFOF seems to come a little hotter nutrient wise but in a cleanish organic way that doesn't burn plants to much. (I used to start germination in it). Anyway I think most the store soils work fine. Pretty much just always add perlite or/and coco fiber. I do really dislike Sta-Green (yellow bag) though because how it clumps.(Was yrs ago may be better now?)
Once you've had your fill with them I'd find either an Ace hardware or Hydro shop near you that sells Pro-Mix BX/HP(HP=more perlite). Its a fair price for a soil that is airy but still retains water for a fair amount of time. I mainly like how it comes with little/no nutrients in it though because I feel like that takes a little more of the guess work out of the grow.
Heres pic of the miracle grow plant(MG moisture control + MG all purpose fertilizer), it was one of my first. It was a midgrade seed grown under CFLs. Tip curl looks more like water then nute burn to me but hard to really see and was awhile back. If it was nute burn I honestly think it was a user issue not soil or fert. Though others are clearly easier to use
