predetermined sex?

Hi everyone. I know fem seeds are supposed to be 99% female due to the way they are created. I'm curious if regular seeds have a predetermined sex or if environment in the seedling stage plays a role? If environment does play a role, what factors determine male or female?

Probably a stupid question, but I know in some reptiles like alligators the sex of offspring are affected by temperature while in egg. Just curious if something similar can happen in plants as well.

I have read claims that you can tell the sex of the seed by the bottom,a wide base the claim goes,is probably female a small one, male.I saw where one person said he had sorted 100 seeds with both wide bottoms and small and he was going to note male vs female in his study. But I never did see the results,I think they are predetermined, however environment may play a part with herming
Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for the reply Tkm953. I'm leaning towards predetermined, because if environment played a role everyone would make the environment one way or another to get more males or females depending what they were looking for. Nature can be surprising sometimes so thought id throw this question out there and see what others thought.

The consensus I've seen is that sex in cannabis is genetically determined. No temperature is going to affect it.

Stress encourages hermaphrodite expression but that's not gender, it's adaptation.

Thanks Ttystikk kinda what I was thinking. Doesn't hurt to ask though. What about male to female ratio? I know most people go by 50/50 ratio, but to me in nature id think there would be more females than males due to the fact one male can pollinate alot of females. So less need for males. Any idea about this? Just trying to learn all I can.

More females than males, you guessed the same reason most others have.

I guess buying in small numbers the way we do makes it seem random and it could be, but id think if you seeded a whole plant and got 1000 seeds there would be more than 500 females. Probably something hard to prove as a fact. Thanks for the input tho I appreciate it.

Since we are on the subject of sex of plants, is there anything you look for after preflowers have shown to determine sex early? Characteristics of male or female plant?

If I were cannabis the genome, I'd want to reproduce at the rate of two females to every male, because one male can pollinate a whole field of females. Therefore females need to be more likely because they're doing the work of making seeds.

They can make seeds themselves to if necessary. It amazes me some of the things that occur in nature.
