Problem with new MH bulb

Hi I just recieved my package of the essentials, Advanced Nutritian three pack, ph tester, ppm meter and a 400watt mh/hps bulb. I got the basic maxwing reflector, I wish I had spent more to get a 6" cooltube. But anyways after hooking it up the MH bulb flickered for a seconds, then burnt out. I let everything cool down and switched to the hps bulb to see what the problem is. And the hps bulb is still running fine. So I`m guessing the bulb was defective and burnt out. Is there special ways to start up the lights? I just screwed the bulb in and plugged her in. It was only on for 2 hours before burning out. Should warrenty cover this?

When you screwed it in, were you holding it with your bare hands ? if so thats your fault not theirs.

I have always used my hands to screw in my MH and HPS bulbs. Is there a reason why not to? I havent had any problems yet? But Ill stop if its going to hurt the bulbs.

your skin is covered in oils and grease constantly... even after washing it.. its the skins natural lube... if these oils get on the part that screws into the socket, it could short the filament and kill the light.. some lights are sensitive enough... not sure if this is one but a good rule of "thumb" (forgive the pun) with electronics is to wear insulated rubber gloves for both your protection and the electrical devices protection... static is also a factor...

It's not like the light instantly died, it was running for 2 hours, started flickerign and burnt out.

Why would you ask us what your warranty covers? You have to read the paperwork or if that is too troublesome call the seller. And yes, never touch the bulb with your bare hands - it leads to explosions and burn outs. Not every time, but often enough.

the problem with holding your bulb like a MH bulb especially or even HPS bulbs the first rule of thumb is NEVER touch the bulb with your bare hands, if doing so will cause the light to burn out or even POP due to humans hands and their oils.

NUFF SAID .....

Not all ballasts work with both bulb types is you ballast switchible or just for hps? That might be your problem. And don't touch bulb with bare skin.

the paperwork i got with my 400w hps/mh conversion light from htg said that it was fine to touch the bulb, that it was halogen bulbs you shouldnt touch with bare hands....

probably a good idea to wipe it off afterwards though with a paper towel before you turn it on...

i actually had the same problem with mine burning out except that it had worked for 2 weeks first, i just called htg to ask if i had done something to cause it to happen and he said they would send me a new bulb...theyre super awesome

Now I wear socks over my hands when handling the bulbs. I dont know whats more dangerous me breaking the bulb with my mitten hands or risk touching to only have it explode. Maybe I should get some gloves? Will plain old silicon gloves work ok?
