Proper bulb care?

I have a 600w hps system. I was wondering... after the bulb turns off, how long must I wait before turning it back on. This has nothing to do with plants... just about the bulb. Is it bad for the bulb to be turned off and then back on again in 3-4 minutes?

Usually wait 15-20 min with my magnetic ballast. You can look into these. http://www.gardensupplyguys.com/HLC102.html

yes wait never switch on then of then on. you can say turn of for 5 mins while you misted or ff. but not on then of then on ect. it as something to do with the gases that are needed. i have a thread on it somewhere. i go and try and find it

Wat I've read is 15 minutes, but it seems like my bulbs won't even refire for about 20 minutes when the power goes out for whatever reason. I have what I thought were low end magnetic ballasts but maybe it's a safety feature or something.

i waited for the after glow on the bulb to go away... and then another 10 minutes. 13-15 minutes total. Bulb fired up like normal. Thanks everyone.
