Proper use of a moisture meter?

I’m using the General Tools MMD4E moisture meter below and I have been told BOTH and wondering what the consensus here say? Do you push the pins into the stem or a compacted bud when you take the measurement? Would the stem give better consistent results? Thanks all!

For checking if bud is ready for dry trim I just flick the leaves on the bud and if they fly off easily then it's time to trim. Another easy test is just bend the main stem of each branch and if you get a snap then its definitely ready for trim.

To check bud moisture post-harvest the best way would be put into a jar 80% full and get a small hydrometer that fits in the jar, check the moisture % on it after a few hours of the jar being sealed.

That and bend stems and if they fold like a straw its not ready, if they snap/click then its time.

Heck of a question! I've searched far and wide for an answer to this question. I hope one of these days some kind soul make a Youtube video about using a moisture meter to check when the buds are properly dried.

I'm using a similar model General Tools MM1E that just has lights that correspond with a bar graph, and manual range selection. Mfr page indicates this one can be used for leak detection in addition to moisture. Probably same sensor with slightly different circuits, externals different (and less flexible for this purpose). Regardless doing OK checking the buds (not stems) on the top colas and getting 10 or so, sometimes others show up to 13. Not an issue since I'm drying wet trimmed buds on a rack in a drying tent, I just let the higher moisture buds stay in there a little longer. Don't really see any correlation to the stems since the buds are trimmed, just for kick put some stems on the rack and they did not snap when nearby buds were at 10% moisture. Might be strain related though, dunno. If I were buying a new meter I would get the MMD4E as it cost less than I paid for the MM1E
